How standard sizing works

Standard sizing is built on a size chart that assigns a set of measurements to each size label. A base size is drafted and then graded up and down by fixed increments. Real bodies rarely match a single size across every dimension, which is why so many people fall between sizes or need alterations.

The compromise built into grading

Grading distributes growth by average ratios derived from population data. Someone whose waist-to-hip ratio differs from the chart will fit the graded pattern imperfectly even at the right nominal size. The pattern is correct for the chart, not for the individual.

How made-to-measure differs

Made-to-measure generates the pattern from one person's measurements, so the waist, hip, rise, shoulder slope and length all come from the actual body. There is no nearest size to settle for; the pattern is the size. This eliminates much of the between-sizes compromise.
