Building the basic rectangle
Start by constructing a rectangle whose width is a quarter of the hip measurement plus ease, and whose height is the finished length. This frame represents one quarter of the skirt: the front or back, halved at the center fold. Mark the hip line at the waist-to-hip depth down from the top edge.
Adding wearing ease at the hip, typically a small amount, ensures the skirt is comfortable and does not strain across the seat when sitting.
Why the waist is smaller than the hip
The hip is wider than the waist, so the top of the rectangle carries excess that must be removed to fit the waist. That excess, the difference between waist and hip quarters, is the total dart intake to distribute. This is the central shaping problem the skirt block solves.
How you distribute it between the side seam and the waist darts determines how the skirt hugs the body between waist and hip.
Distributing the dart intake
- 1.Calculate the waist-to-hip difference for the quarter you are drafting.
- 2.Remove part of it by curving the side seam inward from hip to waist.
- 3.Place the remaining intake into one or two waist darts on the body of the panel.

Shaping the waistline and side seam
Raise the side waist point slightly and redraw the waistline as a smooth curve rather than a straight line, so it follows the natural dip and rise of the waist. The side seam from waist to hip should be a gentle curve, not a sharp diagonal, to skim the body cleanly.
