Tech. Description

Wrap Blouse with Flared Sleeves & Tie Waist

A women's hip-length wrap blouse in fine silk or viscose with a narrow stand collar running from the front edges around the back neck, cut-on front facings, ties sewn into the front edges at the waist and short flared sleeves gathered at the cap.

When To Wear

  • In summer with trousers, a straight skirt or jeans.
  • For the office or daytime events, with the ties knotted at the side front.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Semi-fitted, shaped by darts and drawn in at the waist by the ties.

Length: Hip length, hem overlocked, turned up and topstitched.

Collar: Narrow stand collar, outer stand interfaced, set into the neckline from the front edges around the back; at the fronts both layers are stitched on together with a 0.2–0.3 cm seam allowance.

Front: Wrap front with a V-neckline and cut-on facings. Each front has a bust dart pressed upwards and a wrap dart pressed downwards.

Closure: Two ties caught between each front and its facing at the waist; one passes through an opening in the right side seam, topstitched 0.1 cm around, and the ties knot at the front.

Sleeves: Short flared set-in sleeves, gathered between notches at the cap; armhole seams pressed towards the front.

Back: Centre back seam with darts pressed towards it.

Finishing: Side seams pressed open, shoulder seams pressed towards the back, all overlocked.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Attaching a stand collar together with cut-on facings, inserting ties into the front edges, an opening in the side seam and handling fine slippery fabric.

Fabric Recommendations

Fine silk and viscose fabrics.

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • Front – 2 pieces
  • Back – 2 pieces
  • Stand Collar – 2 pieces
  • Waistband (tie) – 2 pieces
  • Sleeve – 2 pieces
  • From fusible interfacing:
  • Stand Collar – 1 piece

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse interfacing to the outer Stand Collar.
  2. Mark and stitch the bust dart on the Front and press it upwards. Stitch the wrap dart along the marked lines and press it downwards.
  3. Stitch the darts on the Back and press them towards the center seam. Stitch the center back seam. Overlock the seam and press.
  4. Overlock the side edges of the blouse. Stitch the side seams and press them open, leaving an opening in the right side seam for the tie. Topstitch 0.1 cm around the opening. Stitch the shoulder seams, overlock and press them towards the back.
  5. Place the Stand Collar pieces right sides together and stitch. Trim the seam allowances and turn the collar right side out. On the inner Stand Collar, clip the seam allowance at the marks matching the shoulder seams. Press the collar.
  6. Clip the Front from the shoulder seam to the mark. Overlock that part of the shoulder seam and the bias edge of the cut-on facing. Stitch the collar to the neckline: along the fronts, the outer and inner collar are stitched on together; along the back, only the outer collar. The seam allowance along the fronts is 0.2–0.3 cm. Fold the facing to the right side and stitch it to the collar and the shoulder seam. Turn the facing to the wrong side. Turn under the free seam allowance of the inner collar and topstitch it into the outer collar attachment seam.
  7. Fold each Waistband (tie) in half lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch along 3 sides: the two long sides and one short side. Turn right side out and press.
  8. Fold the facing to the right side, insert the tie between the facing and the Front, and stitch through all layers in one seam. Overlock the seam and turn the facing to the wrong side. Turn under the open edge of the facing from the tie down to the hem and topstitch.
  9. Stitch and overlock the Sleeve seams and press. Between the notches, sew a line of long, loose stitches and gather the sleeve cap. Set the Sleeves into the armholes. Overlock the seam and press it towards the front.
  10. Overlock the lower edge of the garment, press it to the wrong side and topstitch.
