Tech. Description

Asymmetric Draped Skirt with Tucks and Self-Fabric Ties

A women's below-the-knee skirt with a plain darted back and a wider front panel that folds at the sides, carries four horizontal stitched tucks and falls into drapes towards an uneven hem. There is no waistband: self-fabric ties sewn into the side seams pass through loops at the centre front and centre back.

When To Wear

  • In spring and summer with fitted tops, T-shirts and blouses tucked in or cropped.
  • With a shirt or a light knit and flat shoes for daytime outings.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Straight back with an asymmetric, draped front.

Length: Below the knee; the front hem is uneven and rises in the centre under the tucks.

Waist: No waistband; the upper edge is turned under and topstitched. Ties, stitched and edgestitched 0.1 cm from the edge, are caught into the side seams and threaded through loops topstitched to the front and back at the markings. To keep the skirt in place, the side seams are moved 2–2.5 cm towards the front and tacked with a stitch about 10 cm long, and the fold points at the waist are fastened with snaps or buttons and loops.

Skirt: One front panel with stitched tucks pressed downwards; one back panel shaped with darts pressed towards the centre. Side seams pressed towards the back and overlocked.

Finishing: Hem turned under twice and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Few pieces and simple seams, but the tucks must be stitched evenly and the drape set and secured at the side seams and waist.

Fabric Recommendations

Fabrics of natural or blended fibres that drape well.

Additional Supplies

  • Snaps, or buttons and loops, for the waist fold points

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • Back Skirt – 1 piece
  • Front Skirt – 1 piece
  • Loop – 2 pieces
  • Tie – 2 pieces

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the darts on the Back Skirt. Press darts towards the center of the piece.
  2. On the right side of the Front Skirt, form and stitch the tucks. Press the tucks downwards.
  3. Fold the Ties in half lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch along the long and short sides. Turn right side out, baste, and press. Topstitch the ties 0.1 cm from the edge.
  4. Stitch the side seams of the skirt, inserting the ties. Press seams towards the back and overlock.
  5. Press the upper seam allowance of the skirt to the wrong side, fold, and topstitch.
  6. Press the hem allowance of the skirt to the wrong side, fold, and topstitch.
  7. Overlock the edges of the Loops. Press the long edges of the loops to the wrong side and topstitch. Fold the short edges to the wrong side. Place the loops on the Front Skirt and Back Skirt at the markings and topstitch 0.1 cm from the fold.
  8. To ensure the skirt stays securely on the figure, it is recommended to perform the following steps: fold the skirt along the side seams, shift the side seams 2.0–2.5 cm towards the Front Skirt, and secure the panels together with a stitch approximately 10 cm long. Along the waistline at the fold points, secure the Front Skirt and Back Skirt together with snaps, or loops and buttons.
