Tech. Description

Boat Neck Top with Tie Shoulder

An asymmetric, fitted women's top in stretch knit with a wide boat neckline. The left side has a short set-in sleeve; the right side is sleeveless, with no shoulder seam, and ties in a knot on the shoulder.

When To Wear

  • In spring and summer with jeans, trousers or a skirt.
  • Tucked into a high-waisted skirt or worn loose over trousers; the tie shoulder stays visible.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close-fitting with shaped side seams, ending at the hip.

Neckline: Wide boat neckline, front and back. The neckline edge continues into ties at the right shoulder; the edge, including the ties, is overlocked, turned to the wrong side and topstitched.

Sleeves: One short set-in sleeve on the left side only. On the right the armhole is turned and topstitched, and front and back are joined only by the tie.

Front: One piece, no seams or darts.

Back: One piece, no centre seam.

Finishing: Hem and sleeve hem overlocked, turned up and topstitched; a twin needle keeps the hems elastic.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Three pieces, one set-in sleeve and turned-and-topstitched edges. Experience with stretch stitches on knit fabric helps.

Fabric Recommendations

Knit fabric with medium to high stretch, from natural or blended fibres. Seams are sewn with a stretch or narrow zigzag stitch.

Additional Supplies

  • None besides fabric and thread.

Cutting Plan

  • Back – 1 piece
  • Front – 1 piece
  • Left sleeve – 1 piece

Tip: Cut pieces from knit fabrics should be stitched with a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. When serging, trim seam allowances to 0.6 – 0.8 cm. The hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle to maintain elasticity.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the side and left shoulder seams of the back and front. Serge the seams and press towards the back.
  2. Serge the raw edges of the right armhole and the neckline with ties. Fold to the wrong side, press, and topstitch.
  3. Stitch the left sleeve seam. Serge the seam and press.
  4. Set the sleeve into the armhole, matching notches. Serge the seam and press.
  5. Serge the bottom edge of the garment and the bottom edge of the sleeve. Fold to the wrong side, press, and topstitch.
