Tech. Description

3/4 Sleeve Twisted Front Crop Top

A close-fitting women's shrug-style crop top for stretch knit fabric, ending under the bust, with three-quarter set-in sleeves and a one-piece front that is twisted once at the centre to form a deep crossover V-neck.

When To Wear

  • Over dresses, slip dresses and camisoles to cover the shoulders and arms.
  • Spring and summer evenings, or in air-conditioned offices.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close-fitting, held in place by the stretch of the fabric; no fastenings.

Length: Cropped, ending under the bust at front and back.

Neckline: Deep V at the front, made by twisting the front piece once before the left shoulder and side seams are stitched; round neckline at the back.

Sleeves: Three-quarter set-in sleeves, hems turned up 1.5 cm and topstitched.

Back: One piece without seams or darts.

Finishing: Neckline and lower edge have no seam allowance and are finished with a narrow overlocked edge. Because the twist shows both sides of the fabric, a double-sided knit is used.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Three pattern pieces and no fastenings; the twist is a single turn of the front before closing the left seams. Stretch stitches and a twin needle are recommended for the knit.

Fabric Recommendations

Double-sided knit fabric of medium or high stretch, of natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Twin needle for topstitching the sleeve hems

Cutting Plan

From main fabric:

  • Back – 1 piece
  • Front – 1 piece
  • Sleeve – 2 pieces

Tip: Pattern pieces made from knit fabrics should be stitched with a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. When overlocking, trim seam allowances to 0.6 – 0.8 cm. The hem allowance should be topstitched with a twin needle to maintain elasticity.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the right shoulder and side seam of the back and front. Finish the seams and press towards the back.
  2. Finish the neckline and bottom edge of the garment with a narrow edge stitch.
  3. Twist the front piece once and stitch the left shoulder and side seam. Finish the seams and press towards the back.
  4. Stitch the sleeve seams. Finish the seams and press.
  5. Set the sleeves into the armholes, matching notches. Finish the seams and press.
  6. Finish the lower edge of the sleeve. Fold to the wrong side, press, and topstitch.
