Tech. Description

Cropped Halter Neck Button Front Vest

A women's cropped halter vest with princess seams front and back, a deep V front fastened with two buttons, and bias-tape binding along the front edges that continues into 40 cm ties fastened behind the neck. The back is cut straight across under the arms, leaving the shoulders bare.

When To Wear

  • In summer as a top on its own, with high-waisted trousers, skirts or shorts.
  • On warm evenings, with a long skirt or wide-leg trousers.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close-fitting, shaped by princess seams on the front and back.

Length: Cropped, ending around the waist, with pointed front hems.

Neckline: Halter V-neckline. The front edges are bound with bias tape from the hem upwards, and the tape is carried on as ties 40 cm long that knot at the back of the neck.

Closure: Two buttons, buttonholes on the right front, with the button area interfaced.

Front: Centre front panels cut double and faced along the lower edge, then joined to side front panels.

Back: Centre back seam and princess seams; straight upper edge bound with bias tape; the hem dips to an inverted V at the centre back.

Finishing: Armholes and back upper edge bound with bias tape folded in half; seams overlocked; hem turned up and topstitched 1.5 cm from the edge.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Princess seams, a faced pointed front hem, continuous bias binding that forms the ties, and buttonholes.

Fabric Recommendations

Fabrics made from natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Bias tape
  • 2 buttons
  • Fusible interfacing (button and buttonhole area)

Cutting Plan

  • From main fabric:
  • 1. Center back piece – 2 pieces
  • 2. Side back piece – 2 pieces
  • 3. Center front piece – 4 pieces
  • 4. Side front piece – 2 pieces

Sewing Instructions

  1. Reinforce the buttonhole and button placement on the front piece.
  2. Face the lower edge of the center front pieces. Turn the pieces right side out and press. Then treat the piece as a single layer.
  3. Stitch the princess seams on the front and back. Overlock and press towards the center.
  4. Stitch the side seams. Overlock the seams and press towards the back.
  5. Stitch the center back seam. Overlock the seam and press.
  6. Press the bias tape in half lengthwise and face the upper edge of the back and the armhole edges.
  7. Face the edge of the front opening with bias tape. Face the edge from the bottom hem upwards, forming a tie 40cm long from the bias tape. Secure the bias tape at the bottom.
  8. Overlock the bottom edge of the top, fold up and topstitch 1.5 cm from the bottom edge.
  9. On the right front piece, make buttonholes; on the left, sew on buttons.
