Tech. Description

Halter Neck Gown with Sheer Overlay

A women's floor-length strapless dress shaped by princess seams front and back, with a centre back slit and an invisible zip in the left side seam. A long chiffon panel threaded through a buttonhole at the centre front of the top edge falls over the dress and ties behind the neck as a halter.

When To Wear

  • Evening receptions, formal dinners and summer weddings.
  • Warm evenings outdoors, with the chiffon panel tied at the neck.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close-fitting through the bodice and waist, then a long column to the floor.

Length: Floor length; 2 cm hem allowance, overlocked, turned up and topstitched.

Neckline: Straight strapless top edge, finished by the lining. The halter comes from the chiffon panel tied at the back of the neck.

Front: Centre front panel and two side front panels, joined with princess seams; a worked buttonhole at the centre front of the top edge holds the chiffon panel.

Back: Centre back seam with a slit, and princess seams.

Closure: Invisible zip in the left side seam.

Finishing: Stiff corset tape, cut into six pieces, is stitched to the seam allowances of the princess seams, centre back seam and right side seam from the top edge to the waist to hold the bodice upright.

Overlay: Chiffon panel made of two pieces seamed together, all edges finished with a narrow double-turned hem.

Lining: Same panels as the dress, cut only to the top of the slit; understitched at the top edge and attached to the zip tape. The main fabric can be used as lining.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. A close-fitting princess-seam dress, corset tape on the seam allowances, an invisible zip finished with a lining, and narrow hems on chiffon.

Sewing Instructions

  1. On the main fabric pieces, stitch the center back seam (joining the Center Back pieces) up to the slit notch, and the princess seams on the back and front (Center Back to Side Back, Center Front to Side Front). Overlock and press open the center back seam, pressing the slit. Overlock the remaining seams and press them towards the center.
  2. Stitch the side seams, leaving an opening in the left seam for the zipper; overlock and press the seam allowances open. Insert the zipper.
  3. Cut the corsetry tape into 6 equal lengths. Stitch the tape pieces to the seam allowances of the right side seam, the princess seams and the center back seam, from the upper edge of the dress to the waist.
  4. On the lining pieces, stitch the center back seam, the princess seams on the back and front, and the side seams, leaving an opening for the zipper. Overlock and press the seams.
  5. Place the dress and lining right sides together. Stopping 5 mm short of the edges of the concealed zipper opening, fold the lining back and pin it to the upper edge of the dress. Fold the seam allowances along the zipper to the right side of the dress and pin them to the upper edge over the lining. Stitch the upper edges. Turn the seam allowances along the opening to the wrong side. Fold the lining up and understitch it to the seam allowances 1–2 mm from the seam. Turn the lining to the wrong side and attach it to the zipper tape.
  6. Overlock the hems of the dress and lining, fold to the wrong side and topstitch.
  7. Stitch the Train pieces together, overlock and press. Finish the edges with a narrow double-turned hem.
  8. Work and cut a buttonhole on the dress. Thread the Train through the buttonhole and tie its ends in a knot on the figure.
