Tech. Description

Tie-Shoulder Gathered Dress

A women's sleeveless below-the-knee dress with a drawstring neckline: a ribbon threaded through casings along the top of the front and back gathers the bodice and ties in bows at the shoulders. Wide two-layer waist yokes join the gathered bodice to a gathered, slightly flared skirt.

When To Wear

  • Hot summer days, holidays and garden parties.
  • With flat sandals, or over a T-shirt in spring.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Gathered bodice, smooth waist yoke and a skirt gathered into the yoke, flaring slightly to the hem.

Length: Below the knee; hem overlocked, turned under and topstitched 0.5 cm from the edge.

Neckline: Straight top edge on the front and back, turned under 0.5 cm and then 2 cm and topstitched to form a casing. A decorative ribbon is threaded through the front and back casings and tied at the shoulders, so the strap length is adjustable.

Sleeves: Sleeveless; armholes finished with bias binding folded in half, the ends turned under and secured by hand.

Waist: Front and back yokes, each cut double with one layer interfaced; the gathered bodice is caught between the two layers. The yoke-to-skirt seams are pressed up and topstitched 1 mm from the seam.

Skirt: One front and one back piece, gathered at the top edge and joined at the side seams.

Closure: Invisible zip in the left side seam.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Gathering into a double yoke, an invisible zip, bias-bound armholes and a ribbon casing.

Fabric Recommendations

Fabrics made from natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Invisible zip
  • Fusible interfacing (one front yoke, one back yoke)
  • Decorative ribbon for the shoulder ties
  • Bias binding for the armholes

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • 1. Upper Back – 1 piece
  • 2. Lower Back – 1 piece
  • 3. Back Yoke – 2 pieces
  • 4. Upper Front – 1 piece
  • 5. Lower Front – 1 piece
  • 6. Front Yoke – 2 pieces
  • From fusible interfacing:
  • 1. Back Yoke – 1 piece
  • 2. Front Yoke – 1 piece

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse interfacing to one back yoke piece and one front yoke piece.
  2. Stitch with loosely tensioned stitches 0.5 cm from the edge along the upper edge of the lower front and lower back (skirt) and along the lower edge of the upper front and upper back. Pull up the gathers.
  3. Place the front yoke pieces right sides together. Sandwich the upper front between them so that the right side of the upper front faces the right side of the interfaced yoke piece. Stitch all three layers in one seam. Finish the seam, turn right side out, and press. Join the back yoke to the upper back in the same way.
  4. Place the lower edges of the front yoke pieces together with the lower front. Stitch the seam, finish, and press upwards. Topstitch 1 mm from the seam. Join the back yoke and lower back in the same way.
  5. Stitch the side seams, leaving the left seam open down to the zipper notch. Finish and press the seams open, also pressing the zipper opening allowances. Insert the invisible zipper.
  6. Press the bias binding in half lengthwise and use it to finish the armhole edges.
  7. Turn under the ends of the bias binding and secure by hand.
  8. Finish the upper edge of the upper back and upper front, fold it under first by 0.5 cm, then by another 2 cm, and topstitch to form the casing.
  9. Thread the decorative ribbon through the casings, forming shoulder straps of the desired length.
  10. Finish the lower edge of the dress, fold under, and topstitch 0.5 cm from the lower edge.
