Tech. Description

Cascading Ruffle Gown

A women's maxi slip dress on thin straps, cut in panels with princess seams, a centre front and a centre back seam. Four gores with cascading flounces are set into the lower centre front, centre back and side seams, the hem is asymmetric, and a ruffle edges the V-neckline and armholes.

When To Wear

  • Evening events, parties and summer weddings.
  • Warm-weather evenings, with sandals or heeled shoes.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close-fitting through the bust, waist and hips, flaring towards the hem where the gores are inserted.

Length: Maxi, with an asymmetric hem that drops lower on one side; all hem edges finished with a narrow rolled hem.

Neckline: V-neckline at the front and back, edged together with the armholes by a ruffle cut in several pieces and joined into one strip. The ruffle seam is overlocked and topstitched onto the dress 0.2 cm from the seam. Narrow turned-through straps, cut as strips, are sewn to the front neckline; the back ends are attached after a fitting to set the length.

Front: Cut as separate right and left centre and side panels, with princess seams pressed towards the centre.

Skirt: Four gores, one in the centre front seam, one in the centre back seam and one in each side seam. Each gore carries its own flounce, basted to it along the side edges so that the flounce falls in a cascade down the gore.

Back: Centre back seam with an invisible zip, princess seams pressed towards the centre.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Asymmetric right and left panels, setting gores together with their flounces into the seams, an invisible zip, narrow rolled hems on curved edges and a ruffle applied to the neckline and armholes.

Fabric Recommendations

Fabrics of natural or blended fibres.
