Tech. Description

Gathered Front Wrap Dress Flounce Sleeves

A knee-length women's dress with a crossover V-neck bodice: two upper fronts, gathered at the lower edge, overlap and are stitched into a seam under the bust. Long set-in sleeves end in wide flounces; waist darts on the front and back, an invisible zip at the centre back.

When To Wear

  • To the office or to lunch, with low heels or boots.
  • Autumn and spring dinners, birthdays and family celebrations.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Semi-fitted and straight below the under-bust seam, shaped by waist darts on the front and back.

Length: Knee length; hem overlocked, turned up and topstitched 1.5 cm from the edge.

Neckline: Crossover V-neckline. Each upper front is bound at the neckline with bias binding, gathered between the notches and stitched to the one-piece lower front with the fronts overlapping. The fronts are sewn closed, so the dress does not open at the front. The back neckline is also bias-bound.

Sleeves: Long one-piece set-in sleeves with a wide flounce stitched to the lower edge; flounce hem overlocked, turned under and topstitched.

Back: Centre back seam with a 25 cm invisible zip; waist darts pressed towards the centre back.

Finishing: Seams overlocked; side and shoulder seams pressed towards the back.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Gathering, a crossover bodice joined to a lower front, bias-bound necklines, an invisible zip and sleeve flounces.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Mark and stitch the waist darts on the front and back. Press the darts on the front towards the center front, and on the back towards the center back.
  2. Press the bias binding in half lengthwise and bind the neckline edge of each Upper Front. Run a line of loose gathering stitches along the lower edge of the Upper Front between the notches, 0.5 cm from the edge, and gather. Stitch the Upper Front pieces to the Lower Front, overlapping them to form the wrap. Overlock the attachment seam and press it towards the lower front.
  3. Press the bias binding in half lengthwise and finish the neckline edge of the back. Overlock the center back edge. Stitch the center back seam up to the notch for the zipper. Press open the center back seam, pressing the zipper openings, and insert the zipper.
  4. Stitch the side and shoulder seams of the dress. Overlock the side and shoulder seams of the dress, press them towards the back.
  5. Stitch the Bigger Flounce to the lower edge of the sleeve. Overlock the attachment seam and press it towards the flounce. Overlock the lower edge of the flounce, fold to the wrong side, press and topstitch.
  6. Stitch and overlock the sleeve seam. Set the sleeves into the armholes according to the notches.
  7. Overlock the lower edge of the dress, fold up and topstitch at a distance of 1.5 cm from the lower edge.
