Tech. Description

Two Layer Dress

A women's long slip dress on thin straps, made of two complete layers: an inner dress in the main fabric ending at mid-calf and an outer chiffon layer with a diagonal, asymmetric hem that falls below it. Both layers have princess seams on the front and back; invisible zip at the centre back.

When To Wear

  • Summer evening events, garden parties and weddings.
  • Warm evenings, with sandals and a light wrap or jacket.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close-fitting through the bodice, straight below the waist, shaped by princess seams running from the armholes in both layers.

Length: Inner dress to mid-calf, hem overlocked, turned up and topstitched 1.5 cm from the edge; the chiffon layer is longer, with a hem sloping diagonally from one side to the other, overlocked, turned up and topstitched.

Neckline: Shallow V at the centre front, straight across the back. The two layers are stitched together along the neckline and understitched onto the inner layer 0.2 cm from the seam.

Front: Princess seams pressed towards the centre front.

Back: Centre back seam in both layers with a 25 cm invisible zip; the layers are joined along the zip.

Finishing: Narrow turned-through straps sewn to the front neckline; the back ends are attached after a fitting to set the length. Side seams overlocked and pressed towards the back.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Sewing chiffon, two complete dress layers joined at the neckline and the zip, an invisible zip and a long asymmetric hem.
