Tech. Description

Embroidered Yoke Blouse

A women's sleeveless blouson top with square front and back yokes on narrow straps, a body gathered into the yokes and into a band at the lower edge, and a concealed separating zipper in the left side seam.

When To Wear

  • In summer with shorts, jeans or a high-waisted skirt.
  • On holiday or for a warm evening out, when made in silk.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Blouson: a full body gathered at the top and bottom, so it blouses over the lower band.

Neckline: Straight necklines on the front and back yokes, finished with 5 cm bias binding folded in half and topstitched.

Front: Square front yoke; on the drawing it carries embroidery, which is decoration and not part of the pattern pieces.

Straps: Narrow straps made from the bias binding that also finishes the side edges of the yokes.

Back: Square back yoke with the body gathered into it.

Waist: Lower edge gathered into a band cut in two pieces; band ends finished at the zipper and the band topstitched over the seam.

Closure: Concealed separating zipper in the left side seam.

Finishing: Yoke seams overlocked and topstitched down onto the body.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Gathering fine fabric, bias binding that forms the straps, and a separating zipper in a side seam.

Fabric Recommendations

Thin silk and viscose fabrics.

Additional Supplies

  • Concealed separating zipper

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • Front Yoke – 1 piece
  • Back Yoke – 1 piece
  • Front – 1 piece
  • Back – 1 piece
  • Waistband – 2 pieces
  • Bias binding strips, 5.0 cm wide (cut by measurement).

Sewing Instructions

  1. Gather the upper edge of the front and back.
  2. Fold each bias strip for the front yoke neckline, the back yoke neckline and the straps in half lengthwise and press. Stitch the folded bias strips to the neckline edges of the front and back yokes and to the side edges of the yokes, so that the binding fold lies 0.75 cm onto the garment. Trim the seam allowances to 0.5 cm. Turn the binding to the wrong side and topstitch along the necklines, the side edges of the yokes and the straps.
  3. Stitch the yokes to the front and back.
  4. Overlock the seam allowances of the front and back together with the yokes.
  5. Topstitch the overlocked allowances down onto the front and back.
  6. Stitch the right side seam.
  7. Press the seam allowances of the left side edges of the front and back to the wrong side and insert the concealed separating zipper.
  8. Gather the lower edge of the front and back.
  9. Stitch the waistband to the lower edge of the blouse. Finish the ends of the waistband and topstitch the waistband over the attaching seam.
