Tech. Description

Ruffle Hem Pantaloons with Elastic Waist

Women's short pantaloons with wide straight legs, a pull-on elastic waist in a cut-on casing and a gathered flounce at each leg hem, edged with narrow lace.

When To Wear

  • As sleepwear or loungewear in warm weather, sewn from batiste or broderie anglaise.
  • Under a dress or skirt as a light layer.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Loose through the hip, the legs widening slightly toward the hem.

Length: Short legs, ending above the knee.

Waist: Cut-on facing folded to the inside to form a casing, with elastic equal to the waist measurement threaded through an opening left in the centre back seam. The waist is gathered by the elastic.

Legs: Front and back halves joined by inseams and side seams, then by the centre front and back seam.

Finishing: Each flounce is sewn into a ring, gathered to the leg hem and attached; its lower edge is overlocked, turned under and topstitched, with a 1 cm lace strip stitched underneath so it shows below the edge.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Straight seams, an elastic casing, a gathered flounce and lace trim; no closures.

Fabric Recommendations

Lightweight silk or cotton fabrics, for example cotton batiste with broderie anglaise embroidery.

Additional Supplies

  • Elastic for the waist, 2 cm wide
  • Lace strip, 1 cm wide

Cutter's Must

  • Front - 2 pieces
  • Back - 2 pieces
  • Flounce - 2 pieces

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the inseam and side seams, placing the front and back pieces right sides together. Press seam allowances open.
  2. Place the pant halves right sides together. Stitch the center seam, leaving an unstitched section at the back above the fold line of the integrated facing for threading elastic.
  3. Press the integrated facing to the wrong side, fold under the seam allowance, and topstitch 0.1 cm from the fold. Stitch along the marked line and thread elastic, equal to the waist circumference, through the created casing.
  4. Stitch the flounces into rings, gather to the length of the lower edges, and attach to the lower edges of the pantaloons. Overlock the lower edge of the flounce, press to the wrong side, and topstitch. Place the lace trim under the lower edge of the flounce and stitch.
