Tech. Description

Elastic Waist Pyjama Trousers

Women's ankle-length pull-on pyjama trousers cut from just two pieces, with no side seams. The waist is a cut-on facing stitched into three casings, each holding its own length of elastic.

When To Wear

  • As sleepwear, with a pyjama shirt or top in the same fabric.
  • At home, in cotton for summer or silk all year round.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Loose through the hips, legs narrowing slightly towards the hem.

Length: Ankle length.

Front: Centre front seam; no fly, buttons or other opening.

Back: Centre back seam, with a gap left above the facing fold line for threading the elastic.

Waist: Cut-on facing folded to the inside and topstitched 0.1 cm from the fold, then stitched along the marked lines into three casings. Three lengths of elastic, each cut to the waist measurement, are threaded through.

Legs: Each leg is cut as one piece, front and back together, so there is only an inseam, pressed open. Hems turned twice and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Two pieces, inseams, a centre seam, a cut-on elastic casing and turned hems.

Fabric Recommendations

Lightweight silk or cotton fabrics, such as batiste.

Additional Supplies

  • Waist elastic: three lengths, each equal to the waist measurement

Cutter's Must

  • Trousers – 2 pieces

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the inseams. Press the seam allowances open.
  2. Place one trouser half inside the other with right sides together. Stitch the center/crotch seam, leaving a section at the back unstitched above the fold line of the cut-on waist facing to allow the elastic to be inserted.
  3. Press the cut-on waist facing to the wrong side, turn under the seam allowance, and topstitch 0.1 cm from the fold. Stitch along the marked lines to form three separate parallel casings. Thread one length of elastic, equal to the waist circumference, through each of the three casings.
  4. Press the hem allowances to the wrong side, turn under the raw edges, and topstitch.
