Tech. Description

Lace Trim Spaghetti Strap Slip Dress

A women's above-the-knee slip dress on narrow straps, with separate darted cups edged in scalloped lace and a matching lace band at the hem. Front and back are shaped with vertical darts.

When To Wear

  • As a slip under sheer dresses and skirts.
  • As a nightdress or at home in warm weather.
  • On summer evenings, with a jacket or cardigan over it.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted at the bust, slightly widening towards the hem.

Length: Above the knee.

Neckline: V at the centre front where the two cups meet; the upper edge of each cup is covered with scalloped lace, shaped with the iron and pleated at the corners.

Front: Front cut on the fold with two vertical darts; the cups, each with a dart, are sewn to the front along a curved seam under the bust.

Back: Cut on the fold with darts; the straight upper edge is finished with a facing cut on the fold.

Finishing: Self-fabric spaghetti straps sewn under the cup points at the front and under the back facing; their length is adjusted at a fitting. The lace on the cups is attached with a dense narrow zigzag. The hem lace is joined into a ring and sewn to the lower edge with the scallops hanging down.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Shaping and appliquéing lace onto the cups, darts, a faced back edge and narrow turned straps.

Fabric Recommendations

Silk fabrics from natural or blended fibres; satin.

Additional Supplies

  • Lace trim with a scalloped edge on one side (for the cups and the hem)

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the darts on the back and front.
  2. Pin the lace trim to the cups, right sides together, aligning the scalloped edge with the upper edge of the cups. Shape the lace as desired with an iron. On the lace trim, at the corners on the wrong side, create pleats and stitch them like seams. Trim and overlock the seam allowances. Topstitch the lower edge of the lace to the cups along the edge. Trim the cup fabric under the lace, leaving a 1 cm seam allowance. Press these seam allowances towards the cups. Along the lower edge of the lace trim, sew a dense, narrow zigzag stitch, and trim the excess fabric close to the stitching.
  3. Stitch the darts on the cups and attach them to the front.
  4. Fold the facing with the back, right sides together, and stitch the upper edges, inserting the straps between them. Trim the seam allowances to 2-3 mm from the stitching. Fold the facing to the wrong side, baste, and press.
  5. Stitch the side seams, folding back the back facing. Press the seam allowances towards the back. Fold under the short sides of the facings and sew them to the seam. Topstitch the lower edge of the facing to the back.
  6. Fold the straps in half lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch along the long side. Turn right side out, baste, and press. Sew the front ends under the corners of the cups. Try on the dress, adjust the length of the straps, and sew their back ends under the upper edge of the back.
  7. Measure the length of the lower edge of the slip. Cut the required length from the lace trim and stitch it into a loop. Attach the lace to the bottom of the garment, right sides together, so that the scalloped edge faces upwards. Fold the lace downwards, and the seam allowance upwards. Topstitch the seam allowance to the slip close to the lace.
