Nightgown with Buttoned Bodice and Short Sleeves

A women's mid-calf nightgown with a short bodice buttoned down the centre front, short set-in sleeves and a gathered skirt joined at a raised waistline. The hem and sleeve edges are trimmed with scalloped lace.

When To Wear

  • As a nightgown for sleep in warm weather.
  • As loungewear at home in the morning and evening.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted bodice ending above the natural waist, full gathered skirt below it.

Length: Mid-calf.

Neckline: Round neckline bound with self-fabric bias binding, folded in half and topstitched from the right side.

Sleeves: Short set-in sleeves with lace at the lower edge.

Front: Bodice fronts with bust darts pressed down, cut-on facings and a button closure; right front overlaps left, buttonholes on the right front.

Back: Bodice back cut in one piece on the fold.

Skirt: Front and back skirt panels cut on the fold, gathered to the bodice.

Finishing: Seams pressed open and overlocked; hem allowances turned up over scalloped lace so that the scallops show, then topstitched.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch darts on the front, press allowances downwards.
  2. Stitch side seams on the skirt and shirt top. Stitch shoulder seams and sleeve seams. Press seam allowances open and overlock.
  3. On each front, press the integrated facing to the wrong side along the edge line, fold the raw edge inwards, press and baste.
  4. Fold the bias binding in half lengthwise, right side out, and press. Align the bias binding with the neckline edge and stitch at 0.5 cm. Press the bias binding upwards, fold the ends. Fold the bias binding fold to the wrong side, enclosing the neckline edge, and topstitch from the right side into the bias binding attachment seam.
  5. Set in the sleeves. Overlock seam allowances and press towards the sleeve.
  6. Overlap the right front over the left, aligning the center lines and baste the bottom edges. Place the skirt and top right sides together, gather the skirt edge to match the length of the top edge and stitch. Overlock seam allowances and press upwards.
  7. Overlock seam allowances for the hem of the garment and sleeve hem, fold to the wrong side, place lace trim underneath so that the scallops peek out, and topstitch.
  8. On the right front, make buttonholes, on the left, sew on buttons.
