Tech. Description

Strapless Dress with Draped Front Rosette

A women's strapless fitted dress, about 90 cm long from the waist, with a diagonal hip seam on the front, a lined pleated flounce falling from that seam to the hem, and a gathered fabric rose. Fully lined, with corset tape in the side seams.

When To Wear

  • Evening parties, receptions and weddings.
  • With a bolero or wrap over the bare shoulders in cooler weather.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close-fitting through bust, waist and hips, shaped by darts on the front and back.

Length: About 90 cm from the waist.

Neckline: Strapless, straight upper edge, finished by the lining and understitched. The upper edges of the lining are interfaced with a 7 cm strip, and 8 mm rigid corset tape is stitched to the side seam allowances from 1 cm below the top edge to the waist.

Front: The front bodice is joined to the front skirt along a diagonal seam at hip level, pressed upwards.

Skirt: A flounce, lined with lining fabric and turned through, is pleated according to the markings and basted onto the front skirt so that it is caught in the hip seam and the side seam. A rose made from a gathered folded bias strip is sewn on by hand.

Back: Two pieces with darts and a centre back seam, a concealed zipper above and a slit at the hem.

Finishing: Hem blind-stitched by hand.

Lining: Full lining assembled like the dress, hemmed 2 cm shorter, with its slit allowances sewn to those of the dress.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. A lined strapless bodice with corset tape, a concealed zipper, a lined pleated flounce set into a diagonal seam, a lined slit and a hand-made fabric rose.

  • Front Skirt – 1 piece
  • Flounce – 1 piece
  • Bias Tape For Rose – 1 piece

From lining:

  • Back – 2 pieces

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the darts on the Front and Back.
  2. Stitch the center back seam between the marks.
  3. Place the lining Flounce and the main Flounce right sides together and stitch along the short edge and the long lower edges. Trim the seam allowances close to the seam, diagonally at the corners. Turn right side out, baste and press. Baste the upper edges together. Lay and baste the pleats on the right side according to the markings. Fold the short front edge to the wrong side along the marked line and baste along the upper edge. Place the Flounce, wrong side down, on the right side of the Front Skirt, matching the center lines and the mark. Baste the Flounce to the skirt along the upper and side edges.
  4. Stitch the Front to the Front Skirt with the Flounce. Press the seam allowance upwards.
  5. Stitch the side seams.
  6. Press the zipper allowance to the wrong side. Insert the zipper so that the teeth are not visible.
  7. Stitch the corset tape onto the side seam allowances, starting 1 cm below the upper edge and ending at the waist.
  8. Assemble the lining in the same way as the dress. Place the lining and the dress right sides together and stitch along the upper edge. Fold the lining up and understitch it to the seam allowance. Press the upper edge.
  9. Press the slit allowances to the wrong side. Press the hem allowance to the wrong side and hem with blind stitches. Hem the lining with a turned-up hem so that it is 2 cm shorter than the dress. Turn under the slit allowances of the lining and sew them to the slit allowances of the dress.
  10. Fold the Bias Tape For Rose in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Sew two rows of long machine stitches along the raw edges, rounding off the short ends. Trim the excess fabric at the rounded ends. Gather the strip by pulling the threads: the tighter it is gathered, the wider the rosebud will be. Roll the gathered strip into a flower and secure the lower edge. Trim the allowances to a minimum. Sew the finished rose to the dress.
