Tech. Description

American Armhole Dress with Front CutOut

A women's below-the-knee sheath dress in knit fabric with American armholes, a high neck finished with a folded band, and a double-layer upper front cut on the diagonal. A loose overlay panel with a cut-on facing lies over the lower front.

When To Wear

  • Evening events, dinners and receptions.
  • Spring and summer: the shoulders are left bare.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close-fitting, shaped with darts on the front and back.

Length: Below the knee.

Neckline: High round neck finished with a strip folded in half lengthwise, forming a narrow stand.

Sleeves: Sleeveless, with American armholes cut in from the base of the neck. Armhole allowances are stabilised with fusible tape, pressed under and hand-sewn with blind stitches.

Front: Upper front in two layers (outer and inner), sewn together along the armholes and the diagonal lower edge, then joined to the lower front. Under it, a loose overlay panel with a cut-on facing is attached along its upper edge and hangs over the lower front to the hem.

Back: Two back pieces with a centre back seam and a slit at the hem.

Closure: Zipper in the upper part of the centre back seam.

Finishing: Hem, slit allowances and the inner edge of the overlay facing finished with blind stitches.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. A double-layer upper front joined over a layered lower front, a zipper in knit fabric, a folded neck band and hand-finished armholes.

Fabric Recommendations

Knit fabrics and stretch materials only.

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible stay tape (armholes, upper edge of the overlay panel, lower edge of the inner upper front)
  • 1 zipper

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • 1. Upper front - 2 pieces
  • 2. Lower front - 1 piece
  • 3. Flounce front - 1 piece
  • 4. Back - 2 pieces
  • 5. Trim strip for neckline binding - 1 piece
  • From fusible interfacing: iron a strip of fusible interfacing to the seam allowances of the armhole edges (on the front only on the inner piece, do not iron fusible interfacing on the dart depth areas), along the upper edge of the flounce, along the lower edge of the inner of the upper front.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch darts on the pieces. On the upper front panels, press dart depths upwards; on the others, press towards the center lines.
  2. Press the self-faced facing of the flounce to the wrong side, baste at the top. Place the flounce right side down onto the wrong side of the lower front and stitch the upper edges between the darts. Clip the seam allowances near the darts perpendicular to the seam. Fold the flounce to the right side so that its wrong side lies on the right side of the lower front. Baste the upper and side edges.
  3. Fold the upper front panels together and stitch the armhole edges and the lower edges between the transverse notches. Trim the seam allowances, clip near the notches perpendicular to the seam. Turn the upper front right side out, press.
  4. Attach the lower edge of the outer upper front to the upper edges of the lower front and the flounce from the transverse notches. Press the seam allowances upwards, fold the lower edge of the inner upper front and topstitch into the attaching seam.
  5. Stitch the center seam between the notches. Press the seam allowances of the lower slit to the wrong side and hem with blind stitches.
  6. Press the seam allowances along the armhole edges to the wrong side and hand-sew with blind stitches. Stitch the side seams. Secure the seam allowances near the armholes.
  7. Press the trim strip for the neckline binding in half lengthwise, right side out. Fold it with the neckline, aligning the notches, and attach.
  8. Press the seam allowance for the closure to the wrong side. Place the zipper underneath the edges and stitch, folding back the upper ends of the tape.
  9. Press the hem allowance to the wrong side and hem with blind stitches. Also hem the inner edge of the self-faced facing of the flounce.
