Tech. Description

Halter-Neck Maxi Dress with Side Slit

A women's floor-length halter dress with a self-lined deep V upper front gathered into a midriff band, an open back with a straight self-lined back band, and a skirt shaped by darts. Zipper and slit in the left side seam.

When To Wear

  • Summer evening events, holiday parties and outdoor weddings.
  • Warm-weather occasions where bare shoulders and back suit the setting.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted midriff and waist, skirt falling straight to the hem.

Length: Floor length.

Neckline: Halter with a deep V. The upper front is cut double (outer and inner pieces), stitched together along the neckline and armholes and turned through, so no facings are needed.

Sleeves: Sleeveless; armholes finished by the inner upper front.

Front: The lower edges of the upper front are gathered between the marks and joined to a midriff band (lower front) cut on the fold.

Back: Open above a back band cut in two layers on the fold; its upper edge is stitched and understitched 1–2 mm from the seam.

Skirt: Front and back skirt each cut in one piece on the fold, with darts pressed towards the centre. The bodice-to-skirt seam is overlocked and pressed up.

Closure: Zipper in the left side seam; the right side seam is closed.

Finishing: Upper back edge, armholes and neckline stabilised with 2 cm fusible strips; slit topstitched 0.75 cm from the edge; double-turned topstitched hem.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. A self-lined halter bodice, gathering into a band, a side-seam zipper and a slit in lightweight slippery fabric.

Fabric Recommendations

Lightweight silk or viscose fabrics.

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing, cut in 2 cm strips (upper back edge, armholes, neckline)
  • Zipper

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • Upper Front – 4 pieces
  • Lower Front – 1 piece (cut on fold)
  • Back – 2 pieces (each cut on fold)
  • Back Skirt – 1 piece (cut on fold)
  • Front Skirt – 1 piece (cut on fold)
  • From fusible interfacing: 2 cm wide strips for the upper edge of the Back, the armhole edges and the neckline.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Reinforce the upper edge of the Back, the armhole edges and the neckline with 2 cm wide fusible strips.
  2. Place the inner and outer Upper Front pieces right sides together. Stitch the neckline and armhole edges. Clip the seam allowances at the curves.
  3. Turn the Upper Front right side out. Baste along the neckline and armhole edges. Gather the lower edges of the Upper Front between the marks.
  4. Stitch the lower edge of the Upper Front to the upper edge of the Lower Front, right sides together.
  5. Stitch the inner and outer Back pieces together along the upper edge. Fold the inner Back to the inside and understitch it to the seam allowance 1–2 mm from the seam. Baste the lower edges of the Back layers together.
  6. Place the Back and front right sides together and stitch the right side seam.
  7. Stitch the darts on the Front Skirt and Back Skirt. Press the darts towards the center. Stitch the skirt side seams, leaving the left side seam open for the zipper and for the slit.
  8. Stitch the upper part of the dress to the upper edge of the skirt, right sides together. Overlock the seam allowances and press upwards.
  9. Turn the allowances along the zipper opening to the wrong side. Stitch the zipper to the allowances.
  10. Press the slit allowance to the wrong side and topstitch 0.75 cm from the edge.
  11. Turn the hem allowance to the wrong side, turn the raw edge under and topstitch.
