Tech. Description

V-Neck Slip Dress with Sheer Insert

A women's mid-calf slip dress on narrow straps, with V-shaped organza inserts at the top of the front and back. The neckline and armholes are bound with bias strips, and the armhole binding continues over the shoulder as the strap.

When To Wear

  • Summer evenings and parties.
  • Layered over a fine top or with a cardigan in spring and autumn.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close to the body at the bust, skimming the waist and hips, with a slightly flared hem.

Length: Mid-calf.

Neckline: The main fabric is cut in a V at the front and back; the V is filled with a sheer organza insert, so the upper edge sits higher than the V.

Sleeves: Sleeveless. Each armhole is bound with one bias strip that starts at the side seam, runs across the back, forms the strap and returns across the front to the side seam.

Front: One piece cut on the fold, with darts.

Closure: Zipper in the left side seam, set so that the teeth are not visible.

Back: Two pieces with a centre back seam, and an organza V insert matching the front.

Finishing: Insert seams pressed towards the main fabric. Upper edge enclosed in folded bias binding topstitched 1 mm from the lower fold. 1 cm turned-up hem.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Joining organza to a light dress fabric, continuous bias binding that forms the straps, and a side-seam zipper.

Fabric Recommendations

Light dress fabrics of natural and blended fibres; the sample is made in crêpe de Chine 150 cm wide, with organza for the inserts.

Additional Supplies

  • Organza for the inserts
  • Zipper

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • Back – 2 pieces
  • Front – 1 piece (cut on fold)
  • Armhole Facing (bias binding) – 2 pieces
  • Front Neckline Facing (bias binding) – 1 piece
  • Back Neckline Facing (bias binding) – 1 piece
  • From organza:
  • Front Yoke (sheer insert) – 1 piece (cut on fold)
  • Back Yoke (sheer insert) – 1 piece (cut on fold)

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the darts on the Front. Stitch the center back seam.
  2. Stitch the Front Yoke and Back Yoke inserts to the Front and Back, right sides together. Press the seam allowances towards the main fabric.
  3. Stitch the side seams, leaving an opening for the zipper in the left side seam. Press the zipper allowances to the wrong side. Place the zipper under the edges of the opening and stitch so that the teeth are not visible.
  4. Fold the Front and Back Neckline Facing bias strips in half lengthwise, right sides out, and press. Unfold each strip, fold the raw edges to the center crease on the wrong side and fold the strip again along the crease. Trim the seam allowances along the top of the dress and the armholes to 0.5 cm. Insert the upper edges into the finished binding and topstitch 1 mm from the lower fold.
  5. Prepare the Armhole Facings in the same way and bind the armholes, starting at the side seam, going across the back, forming the strap, across the front and ending at the side seam.
  6. Finish the hem of the dress with a 1 cm turned-up hem.
