Skirt with Decorative Tab Fastening

A women's A-line skirt without a waistband, in two layers: the main-fabric back wraps round the sides to the front, where its faced, topstitched edges frame the front panel and its cut-on tabs fasten with three buttons at the waist. The skirt opens with a zipper in the left side seam.

When To Wear

  • In spring and summer, in linen, with blouses, shirts or fine knit tops.
  • For the office and daytime wear, with the button tab shown at the front waist.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: A-line, flaring from the hips to the hem.

Front: One panel cut on the fold, with darts; it lies under the curved, topstitched edges of the back layer, which stop short of the hem at each side.

Closure: Decorative cut-on tabs of the back layer meet at the front waist: buttonholes on the right tab, three buttons on the left. The working opening is a zipper in the left side seam.

Back: Main-fabric back cut on the fold, with two darts, faced along its side edges and tabs by side facings. Under it lies a back lining, joined to the front panel at the side seams.

Waist: No waistband; the upper edge is finished with front and back facings and topstitched.

Finishing: Topstitching along the upper edge of the front and back, the side edges of the back layer and around the tabs.

Lining: Back lining only, with darts, its hem finished separately.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Two-layer construction with the back layer faced along curved edges and tabs, facings worked round a side zipper, buttonholes.

Fabric Recommendations

Light natural fabrics and blended fibre fabrics, such as linen.
