Tech. Description

Button-Front Suede Skirt with Lacing

A women's straight midi skirt for suede, with a buttoned front opening, two patch pockets and thin suede lace threaded over the edges through punched holes.

When To Wear

  • Autumn and spring, with knitwear, a shirt or a fitted top tucked in.
  • With boots and tights in cooler weather.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Straight, slightly narrowing towards the hem.

Length: Midi, below the knee.

Closure: Centre front opening between two front pieces, seven buttons, buttonholes on the right front.

Pockets: Two patch pockets on the front, allowances turned under and topstitched on as marked; the pocket tops are laced.

Waist: No waistband; the waist is shaped with darts at front and back, pressed towards the centre.

Back: One piece cut on the fold, with two darts.

Finishing: Holes punched 2 cm from the edge and 2 cm apart along the front edges, waist edge, hem and pocket tops; a suede lace about 2 mm wide is threaded through them, wrapping over the edge.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Three pattern pieces, darts, side seams and patch pockets; the lacing takes time but no special technique, apart from buttonholes in suede.

Fabric Recommendations

Natural or faux suede, or a dense fabric that does not fray.

Additional Supplies

  • 7 buttons
  • Suede laces about 2 mm wide, cut from the main fabric

Cutter's Must

  • From suede:
  • Front Skirt – 2 pieces
  • Back Skirt – 1 piece on fold
  • Pocket – 2 pieces
  • Also cut thin suede laces, about 2 mm wide.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the darts on the Front Skirt and Back Skirt and press them towards the center.
  2. Stitch the side seams.
  3. Turn under the allowances on the pockets and topstitch the pockets onto the Front Skirt pieces as marked.
  4. Work buttonholes on the right front and sew the buttons on the left front.
  5. Cut thin laces (about 2 mm wide) from the suede. Along the front edges, the waist edge, the hem and the top of each pocket, punch holes for the lace 2 cm from the edge, spacing them 2 cm apart. Thread the lace through the holes, wrapping it over the edge.
