Tech. Description

Three Seam Straight Skirt

Introducing a women's sewing pattern for a classic straight skirt, designed with a sleek silhouette, a tailored waistband, and a sophisticated back slit for ease of movement.

When To Wear

This versatile straight skirt is an essential addition to any wardrobe, perfect for:

  • Professional Settings: Ideal for office wear, business meetings, and corporate environments.
  • Smart Casual Occasions: Suited for creating polished everyday looks or semi-formal gatherings.
  • Versatile Styling: a foundational piece that pairs effortlessly with blouses, blazers, and knitwear for various ensembles.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: a classic straight silhouette, shaped with front and back waist darts and fitted through the hips to the knee for a refined look.

Waist: Features a tailored waistband that sits at the natural waist, providing a clean and polished finish.

Closure: a discreet center back zipper with a button and buttonhole closure at the top of the waistband.

Length: Designed to fall elegantly around knee-length, offering a timeless and appropriate look for multiple occasions.

Back: Includes a center back seam with a functional slit at the hem (with the hem slit allowances turned to the inside) for comfortable movement and a sophisticated finish.

Lining: Fully lined for a smooth drape, enhanced comfort, and a professional internal finish.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Requires skills in sewing darts, inserting a zipper, constructing a tailored waistband, finishing a back slit, and working with lining fabric.

Fabric Recommendations

Choose medium-weight suiting fabrics with good body and drape that hold their shape well, such as:

  • Wool or wool blend suiting fabrics
  • Blended suiting fabrics (e.g., polyester blends, rayon blends)

Additional Supplies

  • Lining fabric (in a matching color, 140 cm wide)
  • Fusible interfacing
  • 1 zipper (appropriate length for skirt)
  • 1 button

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
    1. Front Skirt – 1 piece (cut on fold)
    2. Back Skirt – 2 pieces
    3. Waistband – 1 piece
  • From lining fabric:
    1. Front Skirt – 1 piece (cut on fold)
    2. Back Skirt – 2 pieces
  • From fusible interfacing: Waistband – 1 piece.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse interfacing to the Waistband (Fusible interfacings are ironed onto the wrong side of the piece with a strongly heated iron).
  2. Stitch the center back seam between the zipper-opening mark and the slit mark. Press the edges of the zipper opening and the slit to the wrong side.
  3. Stitch the zipper under the pressed edges of the upper (zipper) opening so that the teeth are not visible.
  4. Stitch the darts and the side seams.
  5. On the lining, stitch the darts and seams. Place the lining into the skirt, wrong side to wrong side, and baste to the upper edge of the skirt. Turn under the lining allowances at the zipper opening and slipstitch them to the zipper tapes.
  6. Place the Waistband right sides together with the upper edge of the skirt and stitch, leaving the waistband extending beyond the right back edge as an underlap for the closure. Stitch the Waistband ends and turn them right side out. Turn under the inner edge of the Waistband and topstitch from the right side, stitching in the ditch of the attachment seam. Make a buttonhole on the left end of the Waistband and sew a button on the right end.
  7. Hem the skirt. Sew the slit allowances to the hem allowance. Hem the lining so that it is 2 cm shorter than the skirt. Turn under the lining edges at the slit and slipstitch them to the slit allowances.
