When To Wear

  • Tucked into trousers or jeans with a belt, as in the drawing.
  • For everyday wear in autumn, winter and spring.
  • Under a jacket or cardigan.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close to the body, shaped by darts on the front pressed upwards.

Length: Hip length, straight hem.

Collar: Polo collar from a lower and an upper collar; the lower collar is interfaced and set into the shirt neckline, the upper collar into the neckline of the facings.

Front: Front cut in one piece on the fold; the placket opening is formed by front neckline facings with cut-on plackets, stitched to the front, cut open and turned to the inside. The lower end of the opening is reinforced with interfacing and stitched across.

Closure: Buttonholes on the right placket, buttons on the left.

Sleeves: Long set-in sleeves with an eased cap, finished with cuffs folded in half.

Back: One piece cut on the fold, with an interfaced back neckline facing.

Finishing: Collar and facing seam allowances pressed open and stitched together on the inside; hem turned up and stitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. A faced placket opening cut between stitching lines, a two-piece collar set between the shirt and its neckline facings, set-in sleeves with an eased cap.

Fabric Recommendations

Medium-weight stable jersey or interlock, or fine wool jersey.

  • Back Neckline Facing - 1 piece
  • Sleeve - 2 pieces
  • Cuff - 2 pieces
  • Lower Collar - 1 piece
  • Upper Collar - 1 piece
  • From fusible interfacing:
  • Back Neckline Facing - 1 piece
  • Lower Collar - 1 piece

Sewing Instructions

  1. Sew the darts on the front. Press them upwards.
  2. Reinforce the lower end of the placket opening on the front with a small piece of fusible interfacing. Press the cut-on plackets of the front neckline facings to the wrong side. Place the facings on the front right sides together along the markings and stitch them along the long sides. Cut the opening between the stitching lines, clipping diagonally into the corners at the lower end. Turn the plackets to the wrong side, align them and stitch across the lower end of the plackets.
  3. Sew the shoulder and side seams, without catching the front neckline facings.
  4. Stitch the lower collar and upper collar together, turn out and press into shape. Sew the shoulder seams of the front neckline facings and the back neckline facing. Sew the lower collar into the shirt neckline and the upper collar into the neckline of the facings. Press the seam allowances open. On the inside, stitch together the pressed-open seam allowances of the lower collar seam and the back neckline facing seam.
  5. Sew the sleeve seams. Sew each cuff into a ring and press it in half along the fold. Sew the cuffs to the sleeves. Set the sleeves into the armholes, easing the sleeve cap.
  6. Hem the shirt.
  7. Make buttonholes on the right placket; sew buttons on the left placket.
