Tech. Description

Godet Skirt with Front Button Closure

A long women's skirt in seven flared gores, with a centre front button opening on cut-on facings and a straight waistband fastened with a button.

When To Wear

  • In spring and summer with a tucked-in blouse, T-shirt or fitted knit top.
  • For daytime and office wear with flat shoes or ankle boots.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close to the body through the hips, flaring towards the hem. The flare is cut in one with each gore, with no separate godet inserts.

Length: Long, below the knee.

Front: Two front gores and two front side gores. The centre front opening has cut-on facings and five buttons, from the waistband to about mid-length; below the last button the centre front seam continues to the hem.

Back: A centre back gore cut on the fold and two back side gores, so there is no centre back seam.

Waist: Straight waistband folded in half, stitched in the ditch from the right side, with a buttonhole on the left end and a button on the right.

Finishing: Hem turned twice and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Long flared gore seams to match, a buttoned front opening with cut-on facings, a waistband finished by stitching in the ditch.

Fabric Recommendations

Medium-weight woven fabrics that hold a flare: cotton twill, denim, linen, viscose blends, light wool.

Additional Supplies

  • 6 buttons (1 for the waistband, 5 for the front opening)

Cutter's Must

  • Back Gore - 1 piece on fold
  • Back Side Gore - 2 pieces
  • Front Side Gore - 2 pieces
  • Front Gore (with cut-on facing) - 2 pieces
  • Waistband - 1 piece

Sewing Instructions

  1. Sew all the vertical seams of the skirt.
  2. Fold the cut-on facings of the front gores to the wrong side and baste.
  3. Pin the waistband to the upper edge of the skirt right sides together and stitch. Press the seam allowances towards the waistband. Fold the waistband in half lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch the ends. Turn the waistband out, turn under the inner edge and pin it so that it extends about 2 mm beyond the waistband seam. From the right side, stitch in the ditch of the waistband seam.
  4. Fold the hem allowance to the wrong side, turn under the raw edge and topstitch.
  5. Make a buttonhole on the left side of the waistband and sew a button on the right side. Make buttonholes along the front opening and sew on the matching buttons.
