Tech. Description

Two-Tone Mock Neck Dress

A knee-length A-line women's dress in knit fabric, with an off-centre vertical seam on the front and back, a gathered lower panel on one side, long set-in sleeves and a folded mock neck collar cut from a companion knit.

When To Wear

  • In autumn and winter for work or every day, with tights and boots or low shoes.
  • On its own: the hidden zipper and the knit cut need no jacket or belt.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: A-line, widening from the bust to the hem.

Length: Around the knee.

Collar: Mock neck: a strip of companion knit joined into a ring, folded in half lengthwise and interfaced; its seam sits 2 cm towards the back from the shoulder seam.

Sleeves: Long set-in sleeves cut from the companion knit.

Front: An off-centre vertical panel seam from the neckline to the hem. On the narrower side, an upper front with a pleat stitched down from the right side is joined to a lower front gathered (or pleated freely) into the seam. Bust darts pressed upwards.

Back: Built the same way: an off-centre panel seam, a pleated upper back and a gathered lower back.

Closure: Hidden zipper in the right side seam.

Finishing: Seams overlocked; hems of the dress and sleeves turned up and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Sewing knits, gathers joined to a straight panel, a hidden zipper in a knit side seam, a folded neckband.

Low-stretch knit of natural or blended fibres for the dress; a companion knit of medium or high stretch for the sleeves and collar.

Sewing Instructions

When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  1. Fuse interfacing to the Collar.
  2. Along the upper edge of the Lower Back, sew a line of stitching with loosened upper thread and gather. Alternatively, you can lay random pleats. Stitch the Upper Back and Lower Back together. Overlock the seam allowance.
  3. Along the upper edge of the Lower Front, sew a line of stitching with loosened upper thread and gather. Alternatively, you can lay random pleats. Stitch the Upper Front and Lower Front together. Overlock the seam allowance. Stitch the left side seam. Overlock the seam allowances and press towards the back. On the Upper Front and Upper Back, lay a pleat along the marked line and secure it with a stitch from the right side.
  4. Stitch the bust darts. Press the darts upwards.
  5. Stitch the front panel seam (Front to Upper Front/Lower Front). Overlock the seam allowance and press towards the Front.
  6. Stitch the back panel seam (Back to Upper Back/Lower Back). Overlock the seam allowance and press towards the Back.
  7. Overlock the right side seam edges separately. Stitch the right side seam from the armhole to the zipper mark and from the zipper mark to the hem. Insert the hidden zipper.
  8. Stitch the Collar into a loop, press the seam allowances open. Fold the Collar lengthwise in half, right side out, and press. Attach the Collar to the neckline; the Collar seam is shifted 2 cm towards the back from the shoulder seam. Overlock the seam allowances.
  9. Overlock the Sleeve seam edges separately. Stitch the Sleeve seam in two steps: from the armhole to the first mark and from the second mark to the bottom of the sleeve. Press the seam allowances open. Set the Sleeve into the armhole, matching notches. Overlock the seam allowance and press.
  10. Overlock the hem edges of the dress and sleeves, press them to the wrong side and topstitch.
