Tech. Description

Sleeveless Overlap Blouse Asymmetrical Hem

A women's sleeveless blouse, slightly flared, with an overlapping two-piece front in two contrasting fabrics, a keyhole neckline with a decorative buckle and an asymmetrical stepped hem.

When To Wear

  • In summer on its own with straight trousers or a pencil skirt.
  • Under an open jacket or cardigan at the office in spring and autumn.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Slightly A-line, shaped with bust darts on the fronts and darts on the back.

Length: Below the hip, longer at the front where the overlap ends in a diagonal step.

Neckline: Round neckline with a keyhole opening at the front, finished with front and back neckline facings; a 3 cm decorative buckle is caught in the facing seam.

Front: Separate right and left fronts. The left front is cut from the contrast fabric; the right front is laid over it along the marks and topstitched along its folded centre edge, which runs diagonally to the hem. A brooch is pinned at the top of the overlap.

Back: Cut on the fold, with darts pressed towards the centre.

Finishing: Armholes finished with a 4 cm bias binding folded in half, turned to the inside and topstitched; hem turned up 2 cm and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Matching the overlapping fronts by the marks, a keyhole facing with clipped corners, bias-bound armholes.

Fabric Recommendations

Blouse fabrics made of natural or blended fibres, in two contrasting colours.

Additional Supplies

  • Contrast fabric for the left front
  • Fusible interfacing (neckline facings)
  • Decorative buckle, 3 cm long
  • Brooch
  • Bias binding for the armholes (or a bias strip cut from fabric)

Fabric & Materials

Fabric recommendations: Blouse fabrics made of natural or blended fibers in contrasting colors. Also needed: Fusible interfacing; decorative buckle 3 cm long; brooch.

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, seam allowances are included. If the contour is single, seam allowances are not included. Seam allowances: Hem allowance – 2 cm; all other seams – 1 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can range from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to account for paired and symmetrical pieces).

  • From main fabric:
    • Back – 1 piece on fold
    • Right Front – 1 piece
    • Front Neckline Facing – 1 piece
    • Back Neckline Facing – 1 piece
  • From main fabric 1 (contrast):
    • Left Front – 1 piece
  • From fusible interfacing:
    • Front Neckline Facing – 1 piece
    • Back Neckline Facing – 1 piece

Sewing Instructions

When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  1. Fuse interfacing to the neckline facings.
  2. Stitch the darts on the Right Front and Left Front. Press the darts upwards. Stitch the darts on the Back. Press the darts towards the center.
  3. Stitch the side and shoulder seams, press the allowances towards the back and overlock.
  4. Overlock the hem allowance, press it to the wrong side and topstitch.
  5. Overlock the center front edges. Fold the center front allowance of the Left Front to the wrong side and topstitch. Clip the allowance at the mark on the Right Front. Fold the center front allowance of the Right Front to the wrong side. Lay the Right Front over the Left Front matching the marks and topstitch.
  6. Stitch the shoulder seams of the Front Neckline Facing and Back Neckline Facing. Press the allowances open. Overlock the outer edge.
  7. Place the facing and blouse right sides together and stitch around the back neckline and the front neckline opening, inserting the buckle. Clip the allowances at the corner and curves, turn the facing to the wrong side and press. Tack the facing to the shoulder seams.
  8. If you are not using ready-made binding, cut a bias strip 4 cm wide and the length of the armhole + 5 cm. Fold the binding in half lengthwise, right side out, and press. Place the binding on the right side of the armhole, raw edges matching, and stitch. Clip the allowances. Turn the binding to the wrong side and topstitch along its fold to the blouse. Press the seam.
  9. Pin the brooch to the blouse.
