Button-Placket Collared Blouse

A women's hip-length blouse with a folded stand collar, an asymmetrical angled button placket on one side of the front, and dropped-shoulder three-quarter sleeves.

When To Wear

  • In autumn and spring with trousers or a straight skirt, worn loose.
  • As an everyday top under a sleeveless jacket or coat.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Loose, slightly widening towards the hem.

Length: Hip length.

Collar: Folded stand collar cut in one piece, folded in half lengthwise, sewn to the neckline and stitched in the ditch on the inside.

Front: One piece with an opening set off the centre and angled from the neckline towards the shoulder. It is finished with two folded, interfaced plackets; the right placket laps over the left and the lower ends are tucked in and stitched together.

Closure: Three buttons; buttonholes on the right placket, buttons on the left.

Sleeves: Dropped shoulder, three-quarter-length sleeves sewn in flat before the side seams; side and sleeve seams stitched in one.

Back: One piece cut on the fold, with no centre back seam.

Finishing: Hem and sleeve edges turned under 1 cm and then 1.5 cm and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. An angled placket opening with a clipped corner and stitched lower end, a folded stand collar, buttonholes; the sleeves and body seams are straightforward.

Fabric Recommendations

Blouse fabrics made from natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing (collar, both plackets)
  • 3 buttons

Cutter's Must

Seam allowances: all seams 1 cm. Hem allowance for the bottom of the garment and sleeve hem – 2.5 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90cm to 150cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to account for paired and symmetrical details). When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  • From main fabric:
    • Back – 1 piece on fold
    • Front – 1 piece
    • Collar – 1 piece
    • Placket – 2 pieces
    • Sleeve – 2 pieces
  • From fusible interfacing:
    • Collar – 1 piece
    • Placket – 2 pieces

Attention! Markings on patterns are made on the right side!

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse interfacing to the Collar and Placket pieces.
  2. Stitch shoulder seams, press allowances towards the back, overlock.
  3. Fold the Collar lengthwise in half, right sides together, and press. Stitch the outer side of the collar to the neckline, press allowances towards the collar. Turn under the allowance of the inner side of the collar and stitch it in the ditch of the attaching seam.
  4. Fold each Placket lengthwise in half, right sides together, and stitch the upper corner. Start and end the stitching exactly at the marked attachment seam line. Turn the piece right side out, straighten, press. Attach the outer edge of the placket to the front, ending the stitching exactly at the marked attachment seam of the lower edge. Press allowances towards the placket, clip at the corner. Turn under the allowance of the inner side of the placket and stitch it in the ditch of the attaching seam. Overlap the right placket over the left, tuck the ends inwards, and stitch, securing the lower edge.
  5. Stitch the sleeves into the armholes, press allowances towards the sleeve and overlock.
  6. Stitch the side seam simultaneously with the sleeve seam, press allowances and overlock.
  7. Press the bottom edge of the garment and sleeves to the wrong side by 1 cm, then by another 1.5 cm, and topstitch.
  8. Work buttonholes on the right placket, sew buttons on the left placket.
