Tech. Description

Asymmetric Button Front Pencil Dress

Introducing a women's sewing pattern for a sophisticated pencil dress, distinguished by its curved asymmetric button-trimmed front and elegantly tailored silhouette.

When To Wear

This dress is perfect for a variety of occasions that call for refined elegance and modern style, including:

  • Professional Settings: Its polished, tailored fit makes it ideal for office wear and business meetings.
  • Semi-Formal Events: The unique asymmetric design and clean lines offer a chic choice for luncheons or cultural outings.
  • Day-to-Night Transitions: Versatile enough to be dressed up or down, seamlessly moving from daytime engagements to evening gatherings.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: a classic pencil dress silhouette, fitted through the bust and waist with darts, gently tapering to the knee.

Neckline: a shallow V-neckline that flows into the curved asymmetric front edge, finished with topstitched facings.

Front: the right front overlaps the left along a curved, topstitched edge decorated with six buttons; the right front is divided by a curved seam with a decorative flap at the hip.

Closure: an invisible zipper at the center back; the front buttons are decorative.

Sleeves: Short set-in sleeves.

Back: Features a clean back with vertical shaping darts and a center back seam with an invisible zipper and a slit at the hem for ease of movement.

Hem: Finishes at knee length with a straight hemline and a back slit.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. This pattern requires skills in assembling asymmetric garment pieces, inserting an invisible zipper, working with facings, and making a neat decorative flap.

Fabric Recommendations

Select structured dress fabrics that hold their shape well, enhancing the tailored silhouette:

  • Dress fabrics made from natural or blended fibers

Additional Supplies

  • Invisible zipper
  • 6 buttons
  • Fusible interfacing

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, they include seam allowances. If the contour is single, the patterns do not include seam allowances. Seam allowances: all seams 1 cm; dress hem allowance 2 cm, sleeve hem allowance 1.5 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to account for paired and symmetrical pieces). The labels on the pattern pieces are written on the right side of the fabric!

  • From main fabric:
    • Back – 2 pieces
    • Upper Right Front – 1 piece
    • Lower Right Front – 1 piece
    • Left Front – 1 piece
    • Sleeve – 2 pieces
    • Flap – 2 pieces
    • Upper Front Facing – 1 piece
    • Lower Front Facing – 1 piece
    • Neckline Facing – 1 piece
    • Back Neckline Facing – 1 piece
  • From fusible interfacing: one Flap piece (upper flap) and all facings (Upper Front Facing, Lower Front Facing, Neckline Facing, Back Neckline Facing).

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse interfacing to the facing pieces and the upper flap.
  2. Place the Flap pieces right sides together and stitch along the front and lower edges. Trim the seam allowances, turn right side out, and press. Place the flap on the right side of the Lower Right Front and baste along the upper and side edges.
  3. Stitch the darts on the right and left fronts and press the dart depths downwards.
  4. Stitch the Upper Right Front to the Lower Right Front. Overlock the seam allowance.
  5. Stitch the darts on the Back pieces. Press the dart depths towards the center. Overlock the center back edges separately on each piece. Stitch the center back seam from the zipper mark to the slit mark. Press the seam allowances open. Insert the invisible zipper.
  6. Stitch the shoulder and side seams. Overlock the seam allowances and press them towards the back. Overlock the front edge of the Left Front.
  7. Stitch the Upper Front Facing to the Lower Front Facing. Stitch the shoulder seams of the facings. Press the seam allowances open. Overlock the outer edges of the facings. Place the facings on the dress right sides together, aligning the neckline and front edges. 5 mm short of the zipper edges, fold back the facing and pin it to the upper edge of the dress. Fold the seam allowances along the zipper back onto the right side of the dress and pin them to the neckline edge over the facing. Stitch along the neckline and the front edge. Clip the seam at the curves, turn the facing to the inside, and press. Attach the facing to the zipper tape.
  8. Topstitch the facing on the left side of the neckline from the right side along the marked lines. Lap the right front over the left, aligning the edge of the Left Front with the inner edge of the facing, and topstitch along the marked lines, starting from the center back seam.
  9. Overlock the lower edge of the Sleeve, press it to the wrong side, and topstitch. Stitch the sleeve seam, then press and overlock the allowances. Set the sleeves into the armholes, matching the notches. Clip the seam allowances at the marks, press, and overlock.
  10. Overlock the hem allowance of the dress, press it to the wrong side, and slipstitch. Topstitch along the slit.
  11. Sew on the buttons according to the marks.

Tip

The dress is recommended to be worn with a decorative belt.
