Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted sheath with a straight skirt.

Length: Around the knee.

Neckline: V-neck formed by the crossover upper fronts; the right upper front lies over the left.

Sleeves: Sleeveless; the armholes are finished with the bodice lining.

Front: Both upper fronts have stitched pleats pressed downwards and are lined; the left upper front is joined to the lower front with a seam, and the lower front has darts.

Skirt: A separate fly piece with pleats at the upper edge and a narrow rolled hem on the outer edge is basted to the lower front along the side and upper edges and hangs as a cascade; it is cut shorter than the front by the hem allowance.

Back: Upper and lower back joined at the waist, darts on both, centre back seam with an invisible zipper; the upper back is lined.

Sewing Instructions

Stitch darts on the upper and lower backs. Press darts towards the center seam. Stitch darts on the lower front, press depths towards the center of the piece.
Join the upper and lower backs, press seam allowances upwards and serge.
Serge the center back edge of each piece separately. Stitch the center back seam from the zipper mark to the bottom, press seam allowances open. Insert the zipper.
Finish the outer edge of the fly piece with a narrow rolled hem. Along the upper edge, lay and baste the pleats according to the markings. Place the fly piece on the lower front and baste along the side and upper edges (the fly piece is shorter than the front by the hem allowance width).
Lay and stitch the pleats on the right upper front and on its lining according to the markings. Press the pleat depths downwards. Place the right upper front and its lining right sides together and stitch the neckline edge and the lower edge. Turn the piece right side out, straighten, and press.
Lay and stitch the pleats on the left upper front and on its lining according to the markings. Place the left upper front and its lining right sides together and stitch the neckline edge. Turn the piece right side out, straighten, and press.
Serge the lower edge of the upper back lining. Place the upper back and its lining right sides together and stitch the neckline edge. Turn the pieces right side out, straighten, and press.
Stitch the shoulder edges of the main garment and the lining in one continuous line. Press seam allowances open. Turn the pieces right side out.
Stitch the main fabric and lining together along the armhole edges. Clip seam allowances at curves, turn right side out, and press.
Join the left upper front to the lower front, press seam allowances upwards and serge. Place the right upper front over the left and baste along the side edges.
Insert the front between the lining and the main fabric of the back and stitch the side edges. Serge seam allowances, press towards the back, turn the garment right side out. Secure the back lining to the back by stitching in the ditch of the waist seam. Stitch the center edge of the lining to the zipper tape.
Serge the lower edge of the garment. Fold to the wrong side, press, and hand-stitch with blind stitches.
