Tech. Description

Ruffled Flounce Dress

A lined women's dress in chiffon with princess seams front and back, short flutter sleeves and an asymmetric bodice: five layered flounces run diagonally from one shoulder across the front, finished at the yoke seam with a fabric rose.

When To Wear

  • Summer weddings, parties and evening events.
  • Warm-weather celebrations, with heeled sandals or pumps.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted through the bust and waist by princess seams, flaring gently from the hips to the hem.

Length: Above the knee.

Neckline: Round neckline, finished with the lining.

Front: Centre front and two side fronts joined by princess seams; a yoke at one shoulder. Flounces 1–3 are topstitched along marked lines 1 mm from the pressed upper edge; flounces 4 and 5 are layered over the armhole, shoulder and neckline. A rose made from a folded bias strip is caught into the yoke seam.

Sleeves: Short flutter sleeves set into the armhole, hems finished with a narrow rolled edge.

Closure: Concealed zip in the left side seam.

Back: Centre back seam and princess seams, four panels in all.

Finishing: Flounce edges finished with a narrow rolled hem, slightly stretched to make them ripple; dress hem finished with a narrow double-turned hem trimmed close to the first stitching.

Lining: Full lining cut from the same panels (centre front and yoke cut as one), attached at the neckline and armholes and to the zip tape; lining hem turned twice by 1 cm and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Advanced. Chiffon handling, rolled hems on curved flounces, layered flounces placed along marked lines, a handmade bias rose, princess seams, a concealed zip and a full lining.

Fabric Recommendations

Chiffon of natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, seam allowances are included. If the contour is single, the patterns do not include seam allowances. Seam allowances: hem allowance for the dress bottom – 2.0 cm, allowance for the lower edges of the flounces – 0 cm, allowance for the lower edge of the sleeve – 0 cm. All other seams – 1 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90cm to 150cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to account for paired and symmetrical pieces). Markings on the patterns are on the right side!

Sewing Instructions

When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  1. Stitch the back princess seams, press allowances towards the center seam and overlock. Stitch the center back seam. Overlock and press the seam.
  2. Stitch the front princess seams, press allowances towards the center seam and overlock.
  3. Overlock the lower edges of the flounces with a narrow rolled hem, slightly stretching the edge.
  4. Press the upper edges of flounces 1, 2, and 3 1 cm to the wrong side. Topstitch Flounce-1 onto the front along the marked line. Stitch along the pressed edge 1 mm from the fold. Then topstitch Flounces 2 and 3 in a similar manner. Lay Flounce-4 onto the front and secure along the armhole, shoulder, and neckline edges. Lay Flounce-5 onto the front over Flounce-4 and secure along the armhole, shoulder, and neckline edges.
  5. Cut a bias strip of fabric, fold it in half lengthwise, and form a rose.
  6. Attach the yoke to the front, inserting the rose into the seam. Overlock the seam and press downwards.
  7. Overlock the left side seam separately. Stitch the left side seam, leaving the section for the zipper unstitched. Press allowances open. Insert the concealed zipper.
  8. Stitch the right side and shoulder seams, press allowances towards the back and overlock.
  9. Overlock the lower edge of the sleeve with a narrow rolled hem, slightly stretching the edge. Set the sleeves into the armholes. Press and overlock allowances.
  10. Stitch the lining similarly to the main fabric pieces. Face the neckline. Clip allowances, turn pieces right side out and press. Face the armhole in 2 steps: first the front armhole, then the back armhole. Attach the lining to the zipper tape. Turn up the bottom of the lining twice by 1 cm and topstitch.
  11. Finish the bottom of the garment with a French hem (also called a "Moscow" hem). To do this, press the allowance to the wrong side by 2 cm, stitch 0.1-0.2 cm from the fold. Trim the allowance close to the stitching. Fold the allowance again and stitch along the previous line. Press the seam.
