Tech. Description

V-Neck Balloon Sleeve Mini Dress

Introducing a chic V-neck mini dress sewing pattern featuring a shaped bodice, full balloon sleeves, and a playfully flared skirt.

When To Wear

This versatile dress pattern is perfect for a range of events, offering a blend of elegance and playful charm:

  • Semi-Formal Gatherings: Ideal for cocktail parties, dinner events, or celebrations where a polished yet stylish look is desired.
  • Daytime Chic & Brunches: a perfect choice for weekend outings, brunches, or casual meetups, balancing comfort with sophistication.
  • Date Nights & Evenings Out: Creates an attractive and confident ensemble for romantic evenings or social events.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: a mini dress fitted through the bust and flaring into a gently flared skirt, creating a flattering and playful silhouette. The front is cut without a waist seam, with a center front seam and shaped bust darts.

Neckline: Features a sophisticated deep V-neckline, finished with a facing.

Sleeves: Full, long set-in balloon sleeves, gathered at the wrist by an elastic casing for voluminous styling and comfort.

Back: The back features a center seam, darts in the upper back and a horizontal seam above the waist joining the flared lower back.

Closure: a concealed zipper is inserted into the center back seam for a seamless finish.

Hem: a flirty mini-length hem that flares out from the waist, designed for easy hemming.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. This pattern requires skills in working with darts, inserting a concealed zipper, creating an elasticated casing, and accurately setting in sleeves and facings.

Fabric Recommendations

Choose thin dress fabrics from natural or blended fibers with a good drape to best achieve the dress's silhouette:

  • Lightweight dress fabrics (e.g., rayon, challis, silk crepe, polyester blends)

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing
  • Concealed zipper
  • Elastic tape, 1 cm wide

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, seam allowances are included. If the contour is single, seam allowances are not included. Seam allowances: all seams 1 cm; hem allowance for dress bottom and sleeve bottom – 2.0 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90cm to 150cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to account for paired and symmetrical pieces).

Sewing Instructions

When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  1. Fuse interfacing to the Back Neckline Facings and Front Neckline Facing.
  2. Stitch the darts on the Upper Back, press the dart intakes towards the center. Join the Upper Back and Lower Back, press allowances upwards and overlock.
  3. Overlock the center back edges separately. Stitch the center back seam from the zipper mark to the hem, press allowances open. Insert the concealed zipper.
  4. On each Front, cut between the horizontal legs of the dart and trim the allowances to 0.5 cm. Stitch the darts on the Front pieces, press the dart intakes away from the center.
  5. Stitch the center front seam, press allowances to the left side, overlock.
  6. Stitch shoulder and side seams, press allowances towards the back and overlock.
  7. Stitch the shoulder seams of the Back Neckline Facings and Front Neckline Facing, press allowances open. Overlock the outer edge. Place facings and garment right sides together and stitch the neckline edge of the back and front. Clip allowances at curves, turn facing to the wrong side, straighten, press. Secure to the garment at shoulder seams and zipper tape.
  8. Stitch the sleeve seam, press allowances towards the back and overlock. Overlock the sleeve hem allowance, fold to the wrong side and topstitch, forming a casing. Thread elastic tape through the casing, adjust length and stitch ends.
  9. Set sleeves into armholes, matching notches, press allowances and overlock.
  10. Overlock the dress hem allowance, press to the wrong side and topstitch.
