Tech. Description

Women's V-Neck Blouse with Flutter Sleeves

A women's pull-on blouse with a deep V-neckline bound with bias binding, bust darts, and short flutter sleeves made of two overlapping pieces joined at the cap. Front and back are cut on the fold.

When To Wear

  • In summer with skirts, shorts or wide trousers.
  • At work under a lightweight jacket, where the sleeves stay loose at the shoulder.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Straight, semi-loose cut, shaped at the front with bust darts pressed upwards.

Length: Hip length.

Neckline: Deep V at the front, round at the back. The neckline has no seam allowance and is bound with a double-fold bias strip; at the point of the V the binding is stitched vertically.

Sleeves: Set-in flutter sleeves, each made of a front and a back sleeve piece that overlap and are basted together along the cap, then joined with a sleeve seam. Sleeve edges are turned and topstitched or finished with a narrow rolled hem.

Front: One piece cut on the fold, no opening or fastening.

Back: One piece cut on the fold, no centre back seam.

Finishing: The right shoulder is sewn before binding the neckline and the left shoulder after. Seams pressed towards the back and serged; hem double-turned 1 cm and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Bias binding on a V-neckline with a mitred point, darts, and setting in a two-layer sleeve.

Fabric Recommendations

Blouse or dress fabrics from natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • A bias strip for the neckline binding, cut to the length of the neckline plus 4 cm

Cutter's Must

If the patterns have a double contour, they include seam allowances. If the contour is single, the patterns do not include seam allowances. Seam allowances: all seams 1 cm; neckline seam allowance for back and front – 0 cm; hem allowance – 2.0 cm. Attention! First of all, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90cm to 150cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to account for paired and symmetrical pieces). When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  • From main fabric:
    • Back – 1 piece on fold
    • Front – 1 piece on fold
    • Back Sleeve – 2 pieces
    • Front Sleeve – 2 pieces

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the darts on the Front, press the dart takes upwards.
  2. Stitch the right shoulder seam, press allowances towards the back and serge.
  3. Cut a bias binding equal to the neckline length + 4 cm. Fold the bias binding in half lengthwise, right side out, and press. Unfold the strip, press both edges towards the centre fold, and press in half again. Bind the neckline edge with it. In the corner of the front neckline, stitch the binding vertically.
  4. Stitch the left shoulder seam, press allowances towards the back and serge.
  5. Stitch the side seams, press allowances towards the back and serge.
  6. Serge the lower edges of the Front Sleeves and Back Sleeves, press to the wrong side and topstitch. (Alternatively, you can serge the sleeve hem with a narrow rolled hem. In this case, the hem allowance should be trimmed.) Lay the Back Sleeve onto the Front Sleeve, aligning the marks, and baste them together along the cap. Stitch the sleeve seam, press allowances towards the back and serge.
  7. Set the sleeves into the armholes, press allowances and serge.
  8. Turn up the bottom edge of the garment twice by 1 cm to the wrong side and topstitch.
