Stand Collar Asymmetrical Gathered Midi Dress

A women's flared midi dress with long set-in sleeves, a stand collar and an asymmetric curved seam across the front, with the lower front gathered into it near the side seam.

When To Wear

  • For the office and daytime events in autumn and winter.
  • With ankle boots or low-heeled shoes; the high collar and long sleeves suit cool weather.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Trapeze, without a waist seam, close at the shoulders and widening to a full hem.

Length: Midi, below the knee.

Collar: One-piece stand, interfaced, folded in half; the inner half is turned under and stitched in the ditch of the collar seam.

Sleeves: Long, set-in, one-piece.

Front: Upper and lower fronts joined by a curved seam that runs from one shoulder across the front to the opposite side. The upper edge of the lower front is gathered from the side seam to a mark; the seam allowance is pressed towards the upper front.

Back: Two back pieces with a centre back seam.

Closure: Invisible zip in the centre back seam, from the top of the stand collar to a mark.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Gathers set into a long curved seam, a stand collar finished by stitching in the ditch, an invisible zip running through the collar.

Fabric Recommendations

Dress fabrics in natural or blended fibres with added elastane.

Sewing Instructions

When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  1. Fuse knit interfacing to the Collar.
  2. Along the upper edge of the Lower Front, run a gathering stitch (loosened upper thread) from the side seam to the mark and gather. Stitch the Lower Front to the Upper Front along the diagonal seam. Overlock the allowance and press it towards the Upper Front.
  3. Stitch the shoulder and side seams, press allowances towards the back and overlock.
  4. Stitch the outer half of the Collar to the dress neckline. Press the allowance towards the collar. Fold under the allowance of the inner half and stitch it in the ditch of the collar seam.
  5. Overlock the center back edges separately. Stitch the center back seam from the zipper mark to the bottom, press the allowances open, also pressing the zipper opening allowances. Insert the invisible zipper from the top of the collar to the mark.
  6. Stitch the sleeve seam, press allowances towards the back and overlock. Set sleeves into armholes, press allowances and overlock.
  7. Overlock the bottom edge of the garment and sleeves, press to the wrong side and topstitch.
