Tech. Description

Dress With Asymmetrical Collar Three-Quarter Sleeves

A women's knee-length dress for low-stretch knit fabric, with a high asymmetrical collar that wraps right over left and fastens with one button. A contrast band at hip level joins the fitted upper part to a flared lower part; three-quarter sleeves end in contrast cuffs.

When To Wear

  • For the office and everyday wear in autumn and winter, with tights and boots.
  • For daytime events, worn without a jacket: the collar covers the neck.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close-fitting through the body to a low seam at hip level, then flared.

Length: Knee length.

Collar: High two-layer collar cut on the fold and interfaced, its upper edge bound with a 4 cm bias strip of the contrast fabric; the right end overlaps the left and is held by one button.

Sleeves: Three-quarter length, set-in, with a contrast cuff joined into a ring and folded in half lengthwise.

Front: Upper front cut on the fold with darts, a contrast insert band, and a lower front cut on the fold.

Back: Upper back with a centre back seam, a contrast insert band, and a lower back cut on the fold.

Finishing: Hem turned 2 cm and topstitched with a twin needle or coverstitch.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. A bound, overlapping collar, darts and horizontal band seams that must match at the side seams, all in knit fabric.

Fabric Recommendations

Low-stretch knit of natural or blended fibres in two contrasting or related colours: the second colour for the bands, cuffs and collar binding.

Additional Supplies

  • Second knit fabric for the inserts, cuffs and bias binding
  • Knit fusible interfacing (collar)
  • 1 button

Cutter's Must

Attention! First of all, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90cm to 150cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to account for paired and symmetrical pieces).

  • From main fabric:
    • Upper back - 2 pieces
    • Lower back - 1 piece on fold
    • Upper front - 1 piece on fold
    • Lower front - 1 piece on fold
    • Collar - 2 pieces on fold
    • Sleeve - 2 pieces
  • From main fabric 1:
    • Back insert - 1 piece on fold
    • Front insert - 1 piece on fold
    • Cuff - 2 pieces
  • From fusible interfacing:
    • Collar - 1 piece on fold

Sewing Instructions

When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match! Tip: Knit fabric pieces are stitched with a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. The hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle or on a coverstitch machine to maintain elasticity. You can also stitch pieces directly on a 3- or 4-thread overlocker.

  1. Fuse the outer collar with fusible interfacing.
  2. Stitch darts on front pieces, press allowances upwards. Stitch the center seam of the upper back, press allowances to the left side and overlock.
  3. Stitch shoulder seams, press allowances towards the back and overlock.
  4. Fold collar pieces wrong sides together and secure along the edges. Cut a bias binding from main fabric_1, 4 cm wide and length equal to the upper collar edge length + 4 cm. Bind the upper collar edge with bias binding, press the piece. Overlap the right side of the collar onto the left and secure them together. Stitch the collar into the neckline, press allowances and overlock.
  5. Attach the back insert to the upper, press allowances upwards and overlock. Attach the lower to the back insert, press allowances upwards and overlock.
  6. Attach the front insert to the upper, press allowances upwards and overlock. Attach the lower to the front insert, press allowances upwards and overlock.
  7. Stitch side seams, press allowances towards the back and overlock.
  8. Stitch sleeve seam, press allowances towards the back and overlock. Set sleeves into armholes, matching notches, press allowances and overlock.
  9. Stitch cuff into a loop, press allowances open. Press cuff lengthwise in half with right side out. Attach cuff to sleeve, press allowances towards the sleeve and overlock.
  10. Overlock the hem allowance, press to the wrong side and topstitch.
  11. Sew a button onto the collar, securing the right and left parts.
