Tech. Description

Fitted Strappy Princess Seam Dress

A knee-length women's sundress on narrow straps, with princess seams running the full length of front and back, a sweetheart top edge finished by an interfaced band, and a centre back zip.

When To Wear

  • In summer on its own, with sandals or flat shoes.
  • Over a thin T-shirt or blouse, or under a cardigan or short jacket in cooler weather.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted through the bust and waist, flaring from the hips into an A-line skirt.

Length: About knee length.

Neckline: Sweetheart top edge on the front, straight across the back.

Front: Centre front cut on the fold and two side fronts joined by princess seams.

Back: Two centre back and two side back pieces with princess seams and a centre back seam.

Closure: Zip in the centre back seam, its top end enclosed in the band.

Finishing: The top edge is finished with a band cut double: an outer layer stitched to the dress and an interfaced inner layer turned to the inside and topstitched into the joining seam. Straps are stitched and turned, then topstitched 0.2 cm from the edge; they are sewn into the front band and their length is adjusted on the wearer before they are fixed to the back band above the princess seams. Hem allowance 2 cm, turned up and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Matching princess seams, a zip in the centre back seam, a two-layer band with straps set between the layers, and a fitting to set the strap length.

Fabric Recommendations

Dress fabrics made from natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing (inner front and back bands, straps)
  • Zip

Cutter's Must

Attention! First of all, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90cm to 150cm) to determine how much material you will need (do not forget to account for paired and symmetrical pieces).

    • Back placket – 4 pieces
    • Center back – 2 pieces
    • Side back – 2 pieces
    • Front placket - 2 pieces
    • Center front - 1 piece on fold
    • Side front – 2 pieces
    • Strap - 2 pieces
  • From fusible interfacing:
    • Back placket – 2 pieces
    • Front placket - 1 piece
    • Strap – 2 pieces

Sewing Instructions

When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches - they must match!

  1. Interface the back and front plackets with fusible interfacing.
  2. Fold the strap lengthwise in half, right sides together, and stitch the long edge. Turn right side out, positioning the seam on the fold, and press. Topstitch 0.2 cm from the edge.
  3. Stitch the back princess seams, press allowances towards the center and overlock.
  4. Stitch the un-interfaced back placket to the back, press allowances onto the placket.
  5. Stitch the center back seam from the mark downwards, press allowances open. Insert the zipper.
  6. Stitch the front princess seams, press allowances towards the center and overlock.
  7. Stitch the un-interfaced front placket to the front, press allowances onto the placket.
  8. Stitch the side seams, press allowances towards the back and overlock.
  9. Stitch the side seams of the interfaced back and front placket pieces, overlock the bottom edge. Place the plackets with the garment and stitch the top edge, inserting the straps on the front. Clip allowances, turn the placket to the wrong side, and press. Turn the center edges inwards and secure to the zipper tape. Topstitch the placket into the attachment seam.
  10. Put on the sundress, adjust the strap length, overlock the bottom edges and secure them to the back placket above the princess seams. Overlock the bottom edge of the garment, press to the wrong side and topstitch.
