Tech. Description

Draped Raglan Sleeve Dress

Introducing a women's dress pattern featuring a wide neckline with a neat band finish, short gathered raglan sleeves and a beautifully draped front panel that falls in soft cascades at the hips.

When To Wear:

  • Casual Chic Outings: Its relaxed elegance makes it perfect for everyday wear with a stylish twist.
  • Semi-Formal Gatherings: Easily dressed up with accessories for lunches, brunches, or relaxed evening events.
  • Travel & Leisure: Comfortable and wrinkle-resistant (when made with suitable fabric), ideal for effortless style on the go.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: a relaxed, straight-cut silhouette that gently skims the body, finishing at knee length.

Neckline: Wide, softly rounded neckline finished with a double-layer facing band; the drape panel is gathered into the front neckline.

Sleeves: Short raglan sleeves gathered along the raglan seams, creating a soft, cap-sleeve effect.

Bodice: A separate drape panel, gathered at the top and caught into the side seams, hangs over the darted front in soft folds, creating a fluid, comfortable fit.

Drape: The finished slanted edges of the drape panel form deep pocket-like folds at the hips (decorative, not functional pockets).

Back: a clean back with a center back seam ensures a streamlined look.

Hem: a straight hemline that finishes at the knee.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. This pattern involves working with knit fabrics, managing drape and gathering, and constructing facings, which requires a moderate level of sewing experience.

Fabric Recommendations

Choose knit fabrics that offer good drape and a medium degree of stretch:

  • Medium-stretch knit fabrics
  • Well-draping knit fabrics
  • Jersey, Interlock, Modal, Rayon blends

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
    1. Back – 2 pieces
    2. Front – 1 piece on fold
    3. Sleeve – 2 pieces
    4. Front Neckline Facing – 2 pieces
    5. Back Neckline Facing – 2 pieces
    6. Front Draping – 1 piece on fold
  • From fusible interfacing:
    1. Front Neckline Facing – 2 pieces
    2. Back Neckline Facing – 2 pieces

Tip: Cut pieces from knit fabrics are sewn with a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. When serging, trim seam allowances to 0.7 cm. The hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle or on a coverstitch machine to maintain elasticity. You can also sew pieces directly on a 3- or 4-thread overlock machine.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Mark and stitch the darts on the Front. Trim the dart folds with the overlocker. Stitch the center back seam, serge and press.
  2. Serge the slanted edges and the lower edge of the Front Draping, turn them under and topstitch. Run a line of long, loose stitches along the top edge of the draping and gather it. At the top edge, fold the slanted (finished) edges of the draping inwards by 1.5 cm. Attach the draping to the top edge of the Front. Baste the front and draping together along the side seams, keeping in mind that the lower edge of the draping is already hemmed.
  3. Stitch the side seams, serge, and press towards the back.
  4. Serge the bottom allowance of the sleeve, fold inwards, and topstitch. Gather the sleeve along the front and back raglan edges. Clip the armhole allowance of the back and front at the notch. Attach the sleeves to the back and front. Press the seams towards the back and front.
  5. Fuse interfacing to the facings. Join each Front Neckline Facing to a Back Neckline Facing, forming two facing rings (an upper and a lower facing). Press the seams open. Place the two facings right sides together and stitch along the inner edge. Turn the pieces out and press. Attach the lower facing to the neckline edge. Press the seam towards the facing. Press the outer edge of the upper facing inwards by 1 cm and topstitch it over the seam attaching the lower facing.
  6. Serge the bottom edge of the dress and the lower edge of the armhole (below the sleeve). Fold to the wrong side, press, and topstitch.
