Tech. Description

Square Neck Top with Sleeve Options

A women's close-fitting knit top with a square neckline and set-in sleeves, shown in short, three-quarter and long lengths. Three pattern pieces: front, back and sleeve; the neckline and hems are turned and topstitched.

When To Wear

  • Everyday wear with jeans, trousers or skirts.
  • Under cardigans and jackets; short sleeves for summer, long sleeves for autumn and winter.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close-fitting, with side seams curving in slightly at the waist.

Length: Hip length, with a slightly curved hem.

Neckline: Square, with slightly rounded corners; the edge is overlocked, turned to the wrong side and topstitched.

Sleeves: Set-in sleeves; short, three-quarter and long lengths are shown, each with a topstitched hem.

Back: One piece, no centre back seam.

Finishing: Seams sewn with a stretch or narrow zigzag stitch, overlocked and pressed towards the back; hems topstitched with a twin needle.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Set-in sleeves and turned, topstitched edges; the corners of the square neckline need careful turning in stretch fabric.

Fabric Recommendations

Knit fabric with medium or high stretch, made of natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Twin needle for the neckline and hems

Cutting Plan

  • From main fabric:
  • Back – 1 piece
  • Front – 1 piece
  • Sleeve – 2 pieces

Tip: Knit fabric pieces are stitched with a special elastic or narrow zigzag stitch. When serging, trim seam allowances to 0.6 – 0.8 cm. Hem allowance is topstitched with a twin needle to maintain elasticity.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the shoulder and side seams of the Back and Front. Serge seams and press towards the back.
  2. Stitch the sleeve seams. Serge the seams and press.
  3. Set the Sleeves into the armholes, matching the notches. Serge seams and press.
  4. Serge the bottom edge of the garment, the bottom edge of the sleeves, and the neckline edge. Fold to the wrong side, press and topstitch.
