Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. This pattern requires skills in working with knit and stretch fabrics, constructing an elasticated waistband, and installing eyelets for the decorative lace-up detail.

Fabric Recommendations

To achieve the desired fit, drape, and support, this pattern is designed to use a combination of stretch fabrics:

  • High-stretch knit fabric for the central front and back panels.
  • Stretch fabric or low-stretch knit fabric for the waistband and side panels of the front and back.

Additional Supplies

  • 4 eyelets
  • Decorative lacing cord
  • Elastic, 4.5–5 cm wide

Cutting Plan

  • 1. Side back – 2 pieces (from low stretch fabric or knit)
  • 2. Side front – 2 pieces (from low stretch fabric or knit)
  • 3. Waistband – 1 piece (from low stretch fabric or knit)
  • 4. Center front – 1 piece (from high stretch knit)
  • 5. Center back – 1 piece (from high stretch knit)

Sewing Instructions

  1. Prepare the drawstring: Cut a strip 2 cm wide along the grainline. Fold and press the long edges towards the center. Fold the drawstring in half lengthwise and press. Stitch 0.2 cm from the edge.
  2. Prepare the loop tabs: Cut decorative cord into 4 cm long pieces.
  3. Mark and attach the loops to the side panels of the front and back.
  4. Stitch the princess seams on the front and back. Overlock the seam allowances and press them towards the side panels of the front and back.
  5. Overlock and stitch the side seams. Press the side seams open.
  6. Fold the waistband in half lengthwise and press. Unfold the waistband and stitch it into a loop, leaving an opening for the elastic. Overlock the inner edge of the waistband. Attach the outer edge of the waistband to the upper edge of the skirt, matching notches. Turn the inner edge to the wrong side and topstitch in the ditch of the seam.
  7. Overlock the bottom edge of the skirt, fold up, press, and topstitch to the skirt.
  8. Insert the decorative drawstring into the loops and attach cord ends. Thread the elastic (4.5–5 cm wide) through the opening in the waistband and stitch it into a loop.
