Tech. Description

Halter Neck Maxi Dress with Side Slits

A women's long, straight sleeveless dress with a high round neckline and deeply cut-in halter armholes, shaped with bust and waist darts. It has long slits in both side seams, a concealed zip at the centre back and a full lining that finishes the neckline and armholes.

When To Wear

  • Summer evenings, parties and dinners out.
  • With heeled sandals; with a jacket or shawl when the evening gets cool.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Straight, close-fitting column shaped by darts.

Length: Long, to the ankle; hem overlocked, turned up and topstitched 1.5 cm from the edge.

Neckline: High round neckline, faced with the lining and understitched 0.2 cm from the seam.

Sleeves: Sleeveless, with armholes cut in deeply towards the neck so the shoulders are left bare. The armhole edges are interfaced in the main fabric, finished with the lining and understitched.

Front: One piece with bust darts from the side seams, pressed down, and waist darts.

Back: Cut in two with a centre back seam and waist darts.

Closure: Concealed zip, 25 cm, in the upper part of the centre back seam.

Skirt: Slits in both side seams, from about knee height to the hem, with allowances pressed back and topstitched 0.5 cm from the edge.

Lining: Full lining with the same darts as the dress, lower edge turned up and topstitched; sewn to the zip allowances at the centre back.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Bust and waist darts, a concealed zip, topstitched side slits and a lining that finishes the neckline and narrow armhole straps.

Fabric Recommendations

Fabrics made of natural or blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Concealed zip, 25 cm
  • Lining fabric
  • Fusible interfacing (front and back armhole areas)

Cutting Plan

If the patterns have a double contour, they include seam allowances. If the contour is single, the patterns do not include seam allowances. Seam allowances: all seams 1 cm. Hem allowance – 2 cm. Attention! First, print out the paper patterns and lay them out on the fabric width (fabric width can be from 90 cm to 150 cm) to determine how much material you will need. When stitching pieces, pay attention to the notches – they must match!

  • From main fabric:
    • Back – 2 pieces
    • Front – 1 piece
  • From lining fabric:
    • Back Lining – 2 pieces
    • Front Lining – 1 piece
  • From fusible interfacing:
    • Back Armhole Facing – 2 pieces
    • Front Armhole Facing – 1 piece

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse the Front Armhole Facing and Back Armhole Facing (fusible interfacing) to the armhole areas of the Front and Back cut from main fabric.
  2. Mark and stitch the waist darts on the Back and Front. Press back darts towards the center back, and front darts towards the center front. Mark and stitch the bust darts on the Front and press them downwards.
  3. Overlock the side edges of the Front and Back, and the center back edges.
  4. Stitch the side and shoulder seams of the Front and Back, leaving the slits open in the side seams, and press the seams open. Press the slit allowances and topstitch along the slits 0.5 cm from the edge.
  5. Mark and stitch the darts on the Front Lining and Back Lining, pressing them in the same direction as on the main fabric. Stitch the side and shoulder seams of the lining, overlock them and press towards the back. Overlock the lower edge of the lining, press it to the wrong side and topstitch. Overlock the center back edges of the lining, stitch the center back seam up to the zipper notch and press open.
  6. Stitch the center back seam of the dress up to the zipper notch and press open. Insert the invisible zipper.
  7. Place the lining and the dress right sides together and stitch along the neckline. Understitch the seam allowances to the lining 0.2 cm from the seam. Stitch the upper part of the armholes, turn the lining through, straightening the straps, then stitch the lower part of the armholes. Understitch the armhole seam allowances to the lining 0.2 cm from the seam. Fold under the center back edges of the lining and stitch them to the dress seam allowances along the zipper.
  8. Overlock the lower edge of the dress, fold up and topstitch 1.5 cm from the lower edge.
