A mid-calf women's straight skirt with a waistband elasticated at the sides, darts front and back, a centre back zip and a topstitched back vent.

When To Wear

  • For the office with blouses, shirts and fitted knitwear.
  • Every day in spring and autumn with tops tucked in or worn over the waistband.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Straight, narrowing slightly towards the hem.

Length: Mid-calf.

Front: One piece with two darts, pressed towards the centre.

Back: Two halves joined by a centre back seam, with darts pressed towards the centre and a 20 cm zip at the top of the seam.

Skirt: Centre back vent at the hem; the vent edge is topstitched 0.5 cm from the edge and the top of the vent is secured with a diagonal line of stitching.

Finishing: Seams overlocked and pressed open; 3.5 cm hem, overlocked and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Darts, a centre back zip, a back vent and a waistband with elastic stitched in under tension.

Fabric Recommendations

Fabrics from natural and blended fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing (waistband)
  • 1 zip, 20 cm
  • 1 button
  • Elastic tape

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • 1. Back skirt half – 2 pieces
  • 2. Front skirt half – 1 piece
  • 3. Waistband – 1 piece

Sewing Instructions

  1. Reinforce the waistband with fusible interfacing.
  2. Mark the darts on the front skirt half and back skirt half. Stitch the darts on the front skirt half and back skirt half. Press the darts on the front skirt half towards the center of the front skirt half, and on the back skirt half towards the center of the back skirt half.
  3. Overlock: side edges of the front skirt half and back skirt half, the center edge of the back skirt half, and the vent edge.
  4. Press the lower vent edge up by 1 cm and topstitch at a distance of 0.5 cm from the vent edge. Stitch the center seam of the back skirt half from the notches for the zipper to the vent. Press open the zipper opening, press the vent. Topstitch the center seam of the back skirt half at the upper end of the vent diagonally according to the marking, catching the seam allowance for the vent.
  5. Stitch and press open the side seams of the garment. Insert the zipper into the center seam of the skirt. Press the waistband in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, and overlock the lower inner edge of the waistband.
  6. Cut the elastic trim strip to the appropriate size. Secure the elastic trim strip across the waistband at the sides. Topstitch, stretching the elastic trim strip along the waistband. Attach the waistband to the upper edge of the skirt and finish the waistband corners. Topstitch the lower edge of the waistband into the waistband attachment seam. Make the buttonhole and sew on the button.
  7. Overlock the lower edge of the skirt, fold up, press, and topstitch onto the skirt.
