Tech. Description

Halterneck Dress

A sleeveless women's halterneck dress, straight and close to the body, around knee length. The high neckline is gathered by fabric ties threaded through casings stitched in the front and back facings; the back has a centre seam with an invisible zip.

When To Wear

  • In summer heat, in thin linen: the halter cut leaves the shoulders and arms open.
  • For daytime outings, holidays and warm-evening events, with sandals or flat shoes.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Straight, fitted shape, darts on the front and back pressed towards the centre.

Length: About knee length, hem turned up 2 cm and topstitched.

Neckline: High halter neckline: the front and back facings are understitched and then topstitched along marked lines to form casings; ties made from the main fabric are threaded through and gather the neckline.

Sleeves: Sleeveless, cut-in halter armholes bound with folded bias binding.

Front: One piece without a centre seam.

Back: Centre back seam with an invisible zip running through the back and back facing.

Finishing: Side seams pressed towards the back; side edges of the facings bound with bias binding.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. An invisible zip, a faced neckline turned into casings, and bias-bound armholes.

Fabric Recommendations

Thin linen or thin blended fabrics.

Additional Supplies

  • Bias binding
  • Invisible zip

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
    • Back – 2 pieces
    • Back Facing – 2 pieces
    • Front – 1 piece
    • Front Facing – 1 piece
    • Ties – cut from the main fabric by measurement (no pattern piece)

Sewing Instructions

  1. Stitch the Front Facing to the neckline edge of the Front. Understitch the seam allowances onto the facing 0.2 cm from the seam. Mark the casing lines on the Front.
  2. Stitch the Back Facing to the neckline edge of the Back. Understitch the seam allowances onto the facing 0.2 cm from the seam. Mark the casing line on the Back.
  3. Mark and stitch the darts on the Front and Back. Press the darts on the Front towards the center front, and on the Back towards the center back.
  4. Overlock the center back edges of the Back. Stitch the center back seam of the Back and Back Facing, leaving an opening for the zipper. Press the center back seam open and press the zipper opening allowances. Insert the zipper.
  5. Stitch the side seams of the dress and overlock. Press the side seams towards the back.
  6. Fold the bias binding in half lengthwise and press. Finish the armhole edges of the Front and Back, as well as the side edges of the Front Facing and Back Facing, with the bias binding. Overlock the outer edges of the Front Facing and Back Facing.
  7. Cut the ties from the main fabric. Fold the ties lengthwise and stitch 0.5 cm from the fold. Turn the ties right side out and press. Tuck in the short ends of the ties and slipstitch by hand. Topstitch the facings along the markings to form the casings and thread the ties through.
  8. Overlock the hem, turn it up 2 cm and topstitch.
