Sleeveless Maxi Dress with Drawstring Waist

When To Wear

Hot summer days, in town or on holiday, with sandals or flat shoes.
Over a thin T-shirt or under a cardigan in late spring and early autumn.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Straight bodice, drawn in at the waist by the cord; skirt widening slightly towards the hem.

Length: Long, below mid-calf.

Neckline: Round, finished with bias binding.

Sleeves: Sleeveless, armholes bound with bias tape.

Front: One-piece front with a horizontal yoke seam across the upper bodice, topstitched 0.5 cm from the seam.

Waist: A separate casing topstitched onto the outside of the dress 0.2 cm from its long edges, open at the short ends; a decorative cord with cord ends is threaded through it.

Pockets: On the left front, a large patch pocket with a slanted opening and a separate side section, edgestitched 0.2 cm with 2–2.5 cm reinforcing tacks at the corners. On the right, a smaller patch pocket with a side section, stitched over the side seam so it shows on both front and back.

Back: Centre back seam, pressed open.

Closure: Zip in the left side seam.

Skirt: Side slits from about knee level to the hem, topstitched 0.5 cm around the opening.

Finishing: Overlocked seams; 3 cm hem turned up and topstitched.

Sewing Instructions

Stitch the front yoke to the front, overlock the seam and topstitch 0.5 cm from the seam.
Mark the pocket placement on the front and back. Overlock the outer edge of the pocket side and press it under by 1 cm. Stitch the pocket side to the pocket. Overlock the seam. Overlock: the bottom edge, the top edge of the pocket, and the pocket opening edge. Fold under, press, and topstitch the pocket opening allowance. Press the top and bottom edges of the pocket by 1 cm. Place the pocket on the marking and topstitch the pocket side 0.2 cm from the edge, stopping 2-2.5 cm from the end. Topstitch the top edge of the pocket 0.2 cm from the edge, making 2-2.5 cm bar tacks at the pocket corners. Topstitch the bottom edge of the pocket 0.2 cm from the edge, making 2-2.5 cm bar tacks at the corners and at the same time closing the unstitched gap.
Stitch pocket side 2 to pocket 2 and overlock the seam. Overlock the top edge of the pocket, press under and topstitch 0.5 cm from the edge.
Overlock the side edges of the front and back. Stitch the right side seam of the dress and topstitch pocket 2 over it according to the markings.
Overlock the center back edges, stitch the seam and press open. Overlock the edges of the casing and press them under by 1 cm; topstitch the short ends 0.5 cm from the edge. Mark the casing position on the dress and topstitch the casing along its long edges 0.2 cm from the edge.
Stitch the left side seam of the dress from notch to notch and press open, pressing the allowances of the openings. Topstitch around the opening 0.5 cm from the edge. Insert the zipper.
Fold the bias tape in half and press. Bind the front and back neckline and the armholes with the bias tape.
Stitch the shoulder edges of the dress. Overlock the seams and press towards the back.
Overlock the hem of the dress, fold under, and topstitch. Thread the cord through the casing.
