Tech. Description

Long Sleeve Lace-Up Gathered Front Blouse

A women's close-fitting, hip-length blouse with long set-in sleeves, a V-neckline laced with cord through decorative tape loops, and a centre front seam gathered on elastic.

When To Wear

  • In spring and autumn with jeans, trousers or a high-waisted skirt.
  • For everyday wear in mild weather.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close-fitting, with a straight hem.

Neckline: V-neckline at the front; the front neckline edges are turned into casings with elastic and gathered. Loops of decorative tape are stitched into the neckline edges, and a cord is laced through them and tied. The back neckline is turned and topstitched.

Front: Two front pieces joined by a centre front seam. The seam allowances are pressed open and topstitched 1 cm from the seam to form casings; elastic threaded through them gathers the front from the neckline to the hem.

Sleeves: Long, straight, set-in sleeves with an eased cap and a turned-up hem.

Back: One piece with no seams.

Finishing: Elastic secured in the shoulder seams; shoulder and side seams overlocked and pressed towards the back; blouse and sleeve hems turned up and topstitched.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Elastic casings at the neckline and in the centre front seam, loops set into the neckline edge, set-in sleeves on a stretch fabric.

Fabric Recommendations

Thin fabrics with elastic fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Decorative tape for the loops
  • Elastic
  • Cord for the lacing

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • Back – 1 piece
  • Front – 2 pieces
  • Sleeve – 2 pieces

Sewing Instructions

  1. Mark the loop positions with notches. Cut loops from the decorative tape and stitch them to the front neckline seam allowance.
  2. Overlock the center front edges and the front neckline edges. Turn the front neckline allowances to the wrong side, press, and topstitch 1 cm from the neckline edge to form a casing. Cut the elastic. Thread elastic through the front neckline casings. Stitch the center front seam, catching the elastic ends. Press the center front seam open and topstitch each allowance 1 cm from the seam to form casings. Thread elastic through the center front seam casings and draw it up to the required length. Secure the elastic to the blouse.
  3. Overlock the back neckline edge, turn it to the wrong side and topstitch. Draw up the front neckline elastic and secure it at the shoulder edges. Stitch and overlock the shoulder and side seams, catching the elastic in the shoulder seams. Press the side and shoulder seams towards the back.
  4. Stitch and overlock the sleeve seam.
  5. Set in the sleeves, easing the sleeve cap.
  6. Overlock, turn up and topstitch the hems of the blouse and sleeves.
  7. Lace the cord through the loops and tie.
