Tech. Description

Decorative Bias Tape Bodice Dress

A women's sleeveless, knee-length sheath dress for knit fabric. The front bodice is covered with rows of folded contrast bias binding that curve and cross over the bust, with a teardrop cut-out below the neckline; a zip and a slit in the centre back seam.

When To Wear

  • To the office with a jacket or cardigan.
  • For daytime celebrations, dinners and evenings out, in summer or with tights in the cooler months.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close-fitting sheath with bust darts.

Length: Knee length, with a 3 cm hem.

Neckline: Round neckline bound with bias binding. Below it, a teardrop-shaped cut-out on the upper front, also bound.

Sleeves: Sleeveless; armholes bound with bias binding.

Front: Three pieces: a centre front with a shaped, bound upper edge and a bound lower edge, topstitched over the upper front and the lower front. Folded bias binding is topstitched along marked lines on all three pieces, forming the curved, crossing stripes.

Back: Two centre back pieces with a centre back seam, a zip at the top and a topstitched slit at the hem.

Finishing: Shoulder and side seams overlocked and pressed towards the back. Seams stitched with a narrow zigzag or a stretch stitch; hem overlocked and topstitched with a twin needle.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Accurate placement of many rows of bias binding along marked lines, layered front pieces, a bound teardrop cut-out, a zip and a slit in knit fabric.

Fabric Recommendations

Knit fabric of natural or synthetic fibres.

Additional Supplies

  • Zip
  • Bias binding in a contrasting colour

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • Center Back – 2 pieces
  • Center Front – 1 piece
  • Upper Front – 1 piece
  • Lower Front – 1 piece

Tip: To ensure the material remains stretchy in the areas of finished seams, stitch the cut pieces with a narrow zigzag or a special stretch stitch. To keep the lower edge stretchy, the hem should be overlocked with a serger stitch, and then stitched using a twin needle. The same applies to finishing other edges of the garment that should not lose elasticity. These recommendations do not apply to industrial production.
