Spaghetti Strap Straight Neck Maxi Dress

When To Wear

Evening parties, receptions and New Year celebrations, in sequinned or other shiny fabric.
Summer evening events, on its own or with a wrap over the shoulders.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted through the bust and waist with darts on the front and back, widening slightly towards the hem.

Length: Floor length.

Neckline: Straight across the front and across the back, with no shaping between the straps.

Sleeves: Sleeveless, on narrow straps made from folded, edgestitched strips. The front ends are sewn under the front corners; the back ends are sewn on after a fitting, so the strap length is set on the wearer.

Front: One piece cut on the fold, with a cut-on facing that also finishes the armhole edges.

Closure: Zipper in the left side seam, set so that the teeth are not visible.

Back: Two pieces with a centre back seam and darts; the upper edge is finished with the lining.

Finishing: 1 cm turned-up hem. The instructions explain how to remove sequins from the seam allowances, or how to sew the seams by hand with backstitch instead.

Lining: Full lining, cut without the front facing, 2 cm shorter than the dress.

Cutter's Must

From main fabric:
Back – 2 pieces
Front – 1 piece (cut on fold, with cut-on facing)
Strap – 2 pieces
From lining:
Back – 2 pieces
Front – 1 piece (cut on fold, without the cut-on facing)
From fusible interfacing: the cut-on facing of the Front and the upper edge of the Back.

Sewing Instructions

Stitch the darts on the Front and Back in both the main fabric and the lining. Stitch the center back seam. Place the Back lining and the main Back right sides together and stitch along the upper edge.
Place the Front lining and the main Front wrong sides together and baste along the edges. Fold the cut-on facing to the right side and stitch along the armhole edges. Turn right side out and press.
Stitch the side seams, leaving an opening for the zipper in the left side seam. Press the zipper allowances to the wrong side. Place the zipper under the edges of the opening and stitch so that the teeth are not visible.
Fold the Straps in half lengthwise, right sides out, and press. Unfold each strip, fold the long edges to the center crease on the wrong side and fold the strip again along the crease. Edgestitch. Sew the front ends of the straps under the corners of the Front. Try on the dress, adjust the length of the straps and sew their back ends to the Back.
Finish the hem of the dress and lining with a 1 cm turned-up hem, so that the lining is 2 cm shorter than the dress.
