Tech. Description

Cargo Shorts with Elasticated Waist

Women's pull-on shorts with wide, straight legs, flapped patch pockets on the sides of the fronts and a waistband with two elastic casings that leave the centre front section flat. No zip or fly.

When To Wear

  • In summer, for holidays, walks and weekend wear with T-shirts and shirts.
  • With a tucked-in top: the flat front section of the waistband stays smooth at the centre front.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Relaxed fit with wide, straight legs; each leg cut from a front and a back half with side seams and inseams.

Waist: One-piece waistband, joined into a ring and folded over to the inside. A line of stitching through the middle of the band forms two casings; the elastic, cut into two equal lengths, gathers the sides and back, and its ends are caught at the centre front markings. The centre front section is topstitched all round close to the edge and 0.75 cm in, and stays flat.

Pockets: Patch pockets on the fronts near the side seams, topstitched in place. Above each, a two-layer flap is stitched on, turned down and topstitched 0.7 cm from the edge.

Back: Centre back seam, stitched twice like the centre front seam; no pockets on the back.

Finishing: Deep hem topstitched in two rows, 3 cm and 3.5 cm from the fold; pocket flaps topstitched close to the edge.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Straight seams, patch pockets with flaps and an elastic waistband with no zip; the flat front section needs accurate topstitching.

Fabric Recommendations

Lightweight trouser fabrics that hold their shape, in cotton or mixed fibres; the sample is made in linen.

Additional Supplies

  • Elastic tape for the waistband
  • Fusible interfacing (waistband, inner pocket flaps)

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • Front Half – 2 pieces
  • Back Half – 2 pieces
  • Waistband – 1 piece
  • Front Patch Pocket – 2 pieces
  • Front Patch Pocket Flap – 4 pieces

Fusible interfacing: waistband, inner parts of pocket flaps.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse fusible interfacing to the waistband and the inner parts of the pocket flaps.
  2. Stitch the front panels to the back panels along the side seam allowances. Press the seam allowances open.
  3. Press the seam allowances of each Front Patch Pocket inwards, place it on the Front Half according to the markings, and topstitch. Stitch two Front Patch Pocket Flap pieces right sides together along the side and bottom edges. Turn out, press, and topstitch close to the edge. Place the flap on the Front Half above the pocket and stitch. Turn so that the flap lies with the inner side on the right side of the pants. Press, topstitch at a distance of 0.7 cm from the edge.
  4. Stitch the inseams. Press the seam allowances open. Place both halves face to face. Stitch the front and back center seams twice. Press the center seam allowances open up to the curves.
  5. Stitch the ends of the waistband together, right sides facing. Stitch the longitudinal edge of the waistband to the upper edge of the shorts, right sides facing. Press the waistband upwards, fold half the width to the wrong side, turn under, and baste to the attachment seam. From the right side, topstitch the attachment seam close to the edge up to the markings in the center front of the waistband. Stitch through the middle of the waistband up to the markings in the center front of the waistband. Cut the elastic into 2 equal parts and thread it through the casings. Pin the ends of the elastic to the markings in the center front of the waistband. Topstitch the center front of the waistband all around close to the edge and at a width of 0.75 cm, catching the ends of the elastic.
  6. Press the hem seam allowances to the wrong side, baste. From the right side, stitch at a distance of 3 cm and 3.5 cm.
