Tech. Description

Two Layered Flared Skirt

A women's flared skirt in two layers: a shorter upper skirt over a longer under skirt, both cut in four panels and joined into one waistband. Centre back zip and a button on the waistband.

When To Wear

  • In spring and summer, with fitted tops, blouses and knitwear tucked into the waistband.
  • For parties, dancing and summer events, where the two hem lines move with each step.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Fitted at the waist, flaring towards the hem.

Skirt: Two layers, each of four panels with centre front, centre back and side seams. The upper skirt is laid wrong side to the right side of the under skirt and basted to it at the top; below the waist the layers hang free, and the under skirt shows below the upper hem.

Length: About knee length for the under skirt; the upper layer is shorter.

Waist: Straight waistband, interfaced, folded in half and stitched in the ditch from the right side; buttonhole on the left end, button on the right.

Closure: Zip in the centre back seam, topstitched 0.5 cm from the edge.

Finishing: Both hems turned under twice and topstitched 0.5 cm from the edge.

Level Of Difficulty

Beginner. Straight panel seams, a topstitched centre back zip, a straight waistband and narrow hems; the only extra step is basting the two layers together before the waistband goes on.

Fabric Recommendations

Light natural or blended fabrics; the sample is made in silk.

Additional Supplies

  • 1 zip, 20 cm long
  • 1 button
  • Fusible interfacing (waistband)

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
  • Skirt – 4 pieces
  • Upper Skirt – 4 pieces
  • Waistband – 1 piece
  • From fusible interfacing: Waistband.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Reinforce the Waistband with fusible interfacing (fusible interfacing is pressed onto the wrong side of the piece with a hot iron).
  2. On the skirt panels, stitch the center back seam below the zipper opening mark. Stitch the center front seam and the side seams. Press the seam allowances open; press the seam allowances along the zipper opening to the wrong side.
  3. Baste the zipper to the opening seam allowances at the center back, then stitch it from the right side 0.5 cm from the edge.
  4. Place the Upper Skirt over the Skirt, wrong side of the Upper Skirt to the right side of the Skirt, and baste them together along the upper edges.
  5. Pin the Waistband to the upper edge of the skirt, right sides together, and stitch. Press the seam allowances toward the Waistband. Fold the Waistband in half lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch the ends. Turn the Waistband right side out, turn under the inner edge and pin it so that it overlaps the attachment seam by about 2 mm. From the right side, stitch in the ditch of the waistband attachment seam, catching the inner edge.
  6. Work a buttonhole on the left end of the Waistband and sew a button on the right end.
  7. Turn the hem allowances of the Skirt and the Upper Skirt to the wrong side, turn under the raw edges and topstitch 0.5 cm from the edge.
