Tech. Description

Fitted Halter Top Cowl Neck

A fitted women's halter top in knit or stretch fabric, with a draped cowl at the front cut in one with its facing, a single neck strap and a low back finished with a facing.

When To Wear

  • In summer, with skirts, shorts and trousers.
  • For evenings out and holidays, on its own or under an open jacket.

Key Design Features

Silhouette: Close-fitting, hip length. For knit or stretch fabric.

Neckline: Cowl drape at the front, made by a cut-on facing at the top of the front piece; the front is cut in one piece on the fold.

Front: Halter armholes cut away to the neck; the ends of the strap are set into the upper corners of the front.

Back: Low back with a straight upper edge, a centre back seam and darts; the upper edge is finished with an interfaced facing, understitched and tacked to the seams and darts.

Finishing: One strap cut on the fold, interfaced, stitched into a tube and pressed slightly stretched. Armholes and hem topstitched close to the edge and again 0.7 cm from it.

Level Of Difficulty

Intermediate. Few pieces, but the cut-on cowl facing has to be stitched along the armholes, turned and topstitched with the strap ends caught in, and knit fabric needs care when topstitching.

Fabric Recommendations

Knit fabric or stretch woven fabric.

Additional Supplies

  • Fusible interfacing (strap, back neckline facing)

Cutter's Must

  • From main fabric:
    • Front – 1 piece (on fold)
    • Back – 2 pieces
    • Strap – 1 piece (on fold)
    • Back Neckline Facing – 1 piece (on fold)
  • From fusible interfacing: Strap, Back Neckline Facing.

Sewing Instructions

  1. Fuse interfacing to the Strap and Back Neckline Facing.
  2. Stitch the center back seam and the darts on the Back. Press dart depths towards the center back.
  3. Fold the cut-on facing at the top of the Front to the right side and stitch along the armhole edges.
  4. Fold the Strap lengthwise, right sides together, and stitch along the long edge; turn it right side out and press, gently stretching along the fold.
  5. Turn the cut-on front facing and the armhole seam allowances to the wrong side. Insert the Strap ends into the upper corners between the seam allowances. From the right side, topstitch along the armholes close to the edge and again 0.7 cm from it.
  6. Stitch the Back Neckline Facing to the upper edge of the Back, right sides together. Understitch the seam allowances onto the facing.
  7. Stitch the side seams, without catching the facing. Tack the facing to the seam allowances of the center back and side seams and to the darts.
  8. Turn up the hem allowance and topstitch close to the edge and again 0.7 cm from it.
